Im looking to get a tablet that will fully replace my laptop in the future and ive been keeping my eye on the surface pro 4 for a while now.

Now samsung has its galaxy tabpro s coming out. Basically a direct competitor to the microsoft tablet.

Samsung doesnt have a price out yet on its new tablet, so the final price is gonna be the final determining factor.

Anyone else took a look at the new TabPro S yet?

SP4, there not even close, if you want laptop replacement.

It seems like you folks who are recommending the SP4 without hesitation don't actually know what the Galaxy TabPro S is. I surely didn't, thanks to a work project taking all of my time away from CES news. So I looked it up. It's not an Android tablet. It's a direct competitor to the Surface Pro. Thinner and lighter, with an AMOLED screen and internal specs identical to the base model SP4. Hasn't been released yet (next month) and doesn't even have an announced price, so obviously we won't know how it really performs until then.

It doesn't look like the tablet itself has a kickstand though. As a SP4 owner, the kickstand is a huge asset. I don't like the form factor that makes the keyboard cover part of the kickstand like the ipad pro or the TabPro. Also, not being able to adjust the screen angle is terrible design in general, unless you are always at a table when using the device.

Add in lack of a pen (apparently, they're going to make an optional Bluetooth pen, but that makes we worried about the quality of the input since it seems like such an afterthought), and it would have to be considerably cheaper than the SP4 to make it worth it in my opinion.

That said, others have different uses, and may not need or want a stylus or care about using the device in non-desk/table situations. But in my opinion the Surface has nearly perfected the design for multiple uses for such a form factor, even if they haven't perfected the details like battery life.

Also, it's tough for me to suggest to anyone to buy a first generation device.

That would be a deal-breaker for me, too. The pen, I have no comment because it's not something I really use (having not owned one, though).

I'd be less worried about the quality of the not-yet-released pen and more worried about how much they might've rushed production to get the PC ready in time for CES and a February release.

I would agree, even though it does come with the keyboard it still seems like it'll need to be priced at or below the keyboard-less SP4's base price in order to compete.

Do not own either but do own a SP3 and have had several Samsung tabs in the past. I would go with the SP4 as the platform has proven itself already, the Samsung may have a few bugs in its initial launch.

The specs seem pretty close I just believe in avoiding any initial releases if possible. JMHO

I only bring it up because the Surface is designed with a specific pen, and it's still kind of clunky to use. The recognition isn't far from perfect. But this may be because N-Trig isn't as good as a Wacom pen, in general.

That said the SP4 is wonderful. There are other alternatives to the Sp4 or TabPro though. HP Spectre X2, Lenovo Miix 700. Or if you need a near desktop replacement, the Vaio Z Canvas.

I went with the SP4 because it seemed to have the best combination of all the features available. non-mobile i5, a great kickstand, dedicated pen, and a cool, good quality keyboard. Plus, since it's in its 4th generation Microsoft seems to have figured out a lot of issues that other manufacturers just getting into the game might not have found. (e.g. The cooling in the SP4 is much better than the SP3.) The undoubted biggest issue with the SP4 is the battery life. Doing tasks will yield 4-5 hours of battery life. Doing light tasks will give you ~6hrs. It gets roughly 30m less battery than the SP3. I think it was a mistake by Microsoft to go thinner than the SP3 in exchange for those 30m. That said, it charges pretty quickly. So it's probably not an issue for the majority of users.
