Spammers "bouncing" with my email address

Has anyone ever had problems with Gmail and spammers sending out mass emails with your email address as the "From" address or the "reply to" address?
This has happened twice in the last year. What really concerns me is that somehow they are also going to a lot of my contacts. Does this mean my email has been hacked?
Any advice for email domains if this problem persists and I have to shut down my Gmail account all together?

I can't speak for hacked Gmail accounts, but two acquaintances who had their Yahoo! accounts breached by spammers knew because of these indications noted on a Yahoo! help page.

Changes have been made to your account information.
There are logins from locations you don't recognize in your Login Activity page.
Your Yahoo Mail account is sending spam.
There are messages in your sent folder that you didn't send.
You're receiving multiple failed delivery messages.
You aren't receiving expected emails.
It's possible for spammers to spoof the "From:" address on an email without hacking an account, so it's possible that your Gmail account has not been breached.
You can vastly reduce the odds of your Gmail account being hacked by enabling Google 2-Step Verification.
Once enabled, Google will only require 2-step verification if someone tries to access your Gmail account from a new device.

Happens to me on yahoo every year or so. Basically sends an email to everyone I've ever emailed with just a link in it. Nothing in my sent folder, and 98% of rhe time it gets caught by their spam folders

Google 2-Step Verification rocks, by the way.
Once you enable it there's almost zero concern about your Gmail getting hacked.
And it prevents any new device from accessing your Gmail unless the user knows your password and has access to your cell phone to receive a verification text.
You'll probably forget it's there, until you buy another computer.

Thanks. Enabled 2-Step verification.
I was really worried that it was sent to my contacts, but if they can do that without compromising my account, I guess I can live with the occasional spam bullshite.

2-Step verification.
Chase has something like this too. It's a little annoying to have to redo it if I re-image my computer or get a new one (since the wife and I both balance our accounts mainly via PC), but it's WELL worth it!
