Soundbar Issue - Optical connection will not play DVD sound?

This is a new one to me.
I have a soundbar connected (only connection) directly to my TV. There is no cable outlet in this room right now. I am connected directly from DVD to player to TV via HDMI cable.
The soundbar will not output the DVD sound? Is this because the soundbar is not going through my receiver?

if i understand what you're doing, it should play the audio if you're getting audio in other instances.
the TV is simply pushing audio out optical
it doesn't care if the DVD player is hooked up via HDMI or a chromecast is hooked up via HDMI, it just outputs the audio to the soundbar its receiving from the audio-portion of the HDMI signal going into the TV from the DVD player.
not sure how/why you woudln't get audio out..have you tried another device connected to the TV using HDMI to see if you can hear audio like a chromecast or a roku?
the soundbar optical is connected to TV right?
i know this sounds stupid but have you checked to make sure a different input on the soundbar itself isn't selected? i think my vizio soundbar has 5 or 6 different sources audio could come in from.

Are you certain the optical on the TV is out, not in?

Are there multiple inputs on the soundbar? My vizio has multiple and I have to change it between components.

Make sure the TV is set up to send audio out the SPDIF

check to see if you can change the output from PCM to Bitstream for the optical out the DVD player or stereo you have it hooked to.
