I have an Early 2011 MBP. Its starting to show its age in performance (i.e. slow start up, sometime laggy response times, etc). Will and a new SSD fix this? Or would that be polishing a turd and a waste of money? Id like to put off buying a new laptop for a bit if i can.

Appreciate the advice...

Can you install your own SSD in a MacBook? I thought Apple was pretty hard with these type self installations. Unless you can open your MacBook, they'd have to do it at the apple store, I think.

I installed one in my Macbook and it boots up and shuts down much faster. Prices on SSD drives have been dropping like a rock of late.

Don't need to take it to and Apple store. It's pretty easy to do. There are several YouTube tutorials and guides online to show you how to do it.

Stopped reading right there and the answer is you should have done it a long time ago.

that computer is not that old. it takes about 5 (OK more like 15) minutes. do it. OWC. 480gig is super cheap and you can keep your old HD as an external for backups.

the only thing i've had issues with replacing/upgrading on my macs is the battery. i just put a new one in my mid2009 17" MBP. and the battery is acting weird. it's basically a desktop though, so not a biggie.

Ok, next question then. Which one?

I know Samsung makes a one. Here is a company I saw yesterday,

Any other, cheap but reliable options?

Install these. Very easy to do and cheaper than SSD i think.

My 2011 is responding like it's brand new now.

OWC seems to be the consensus best deal. working like a charm in my old MBP. the 480gig is the most bang for buck. price goes up significantly beyond that if i recall correctly.

i'm about to reinstall windows via Fusion on mine (dumb TurboTax won't make a Business for Mac). 480 is plenty for a backup computer, really.

do both while you have it open. i did.

make sure not to fry anything with static--it is winter, even in Louisiana.

Only with the later ones after 2013 or 14. The non-retina MacBooks can be upgraded just like Windows laptops.

Idk how much SSD would even help my Mac at this point. I can open nearly every program I have and it still runs fast.

Granted I don't know that much about computers.

Without a doubt do it. Ilikelsutoo walked me through it with great links and answered all of my questions. The upgrade I did was on a 2010/2011 computer and I'm pretty sure it's faster now than it was brand new. Wish I had done it before I bought a new computer over a year ago, but I had no idea what an ssddrive was back then. Could have saved a lot of money.

That's odd. I just installed those last night. Now I am looking at adding an SSD to my mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13" non retina.
