Setting up a router as an access point?

Can someone run me through how to do this? I tried doing this last night and all I do is make the new router my main wifi router.
I am trying to add a router on the other side of the house to have a better wifi connection. Currently our bedroom is very weak and goes in and out. I have a Belkin N600 router, i am also using a netgear powerline adapter. I have it ran from the main modem and have the router plugged into it in my bedroom.

Generally when converting a wireless router into a wireless AP you should uplink via one of the LAN ports and not the WAN port. You should also disable the DHCP server which is likely enabled on the device.

That pretty much spells it out. Also, I'm sure you aware but make sure you use the same SSID on both devices.

I was trying to access the router by searching its IP address. I couldn't get it to load a page for the router. I was using what i thought was the general belkin ip address. What am i doing wrong?

Set a static ip on the LAN interface. Your primary router might be 192.168.1.254 so set the access point to 192.168.1.253

Basically what's been said connect new routers Lan to Lan. Turn off dhcp on ap router and give it a static ip. Other suggestion is to set wifi Ssid and key to the same thing on both routers

How do i access the router to turn off the dhcp and give it a static ip? I can't seem to connect to it.

With the router isolated from your home network, if you can, connect a PC directly to one of the LAN ports. Look at the IP address configuration on the PC ("ipconfig /all" via command prompt). Whatever is listed as your default gateway should be the address of the router. You should be able to access it via that IP, then make the configuration changes needed. Once the changes are applied, connect it to your existing router via one of the LAN ports.
