Do we have any SEO gurus on here? I have a small business that has been quite successful. All of my business has been from referrals. I'm hoping to have 1/3rd of my business within the next year to two come from the internet. I have a well designed website with hundreds of articles for content.

Recently spoke with an SEO firm that specializes in my small business area. Another small business in my field said they doubled their revenue using them. They want to charge $2,500 per month and $1,500 for the initial audit.
Anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per month seems to be the standard in my business practice.

Any tips/recommendations before I pull the trigger? One client per month is worth $2,500 per month to me.

I would be interested to see what their deliverables and metrics for success are for $2500 per month. The way people are searching for things and how the search engines rank websites are changing. I’m not sure I would go all in on just organic search. Is it purely search engine optimization that they are offering? Depending on your industry and market, I would diversify the digital marketing approach. It could be a mixture of Google Ads, SEO, paid and organic social media, and targeted display ads. Does it include making sure your website is optimized for lead conversion? Will they analyze your market/competition and give estimated results? It could be different than the market of the company that doubled their revenue.

Seems like a lack of breakdown on exactly what they are providing for the audit and $2500 per month. We break down estimated metrics for our clients per strategy and set of tactics to ultimately determine a cost per lead and cost per acquisition metric to achieve.

I am in the field. Did they have a price or budget in mind before the $1,500 audit? Or is that just what someone else in your field is spending?

Any guarantees of the SEO performance, because I'm assuming you'd like to be on the 1st page of Google asap, but if they misquote the time it'll take after a $1,500 audit, do they do anything to back up the lack of performance? Some companies do.

What's the transparency to justify what they do? Do you get a monthly report of all the actions and activities they performed to justify the cost?

For the monthly amount you're willing to spend, I'd bet 99% of competing business would do an "audit" for free.

Honestly, not sure on deliverables/metrics.

$2,500 covers organic/google ads. Google ads you have to pay for the money spent but they handle the campaigns. My buddy who recommended them pays them $2,000 per month, but they claimed they raised their rate.

I have an issue with a few things:

$1,500 audit seems steep before we even do any business together;

$2,500 per month regardless of location doesn't seem fair. If they sign a firm in Manhattan and charge them $2,500 per month vs. my firm (much, much, much smaller market), then why are we charged the same amount?

What's the going rate for this type of work? I know many law firms dropping $2k+ month just on organic SEO.

How do I find SEO firms that are top notch? That's my biggest issue. It seems like everyone and their damn brother does SEO work and promises results.

My website has 10 years of history with google, millions of clicks, and I have hundreds of articles of content. We went through a complete website redesign which really hurt traffic. And the previous owner never did any sort of SEO work to the website.

A top notch SEO company is tough to quantify because nothing is really regulated. I'd look for referrals, reviews, etc.

In fact, Google isn't concerned about you spending money to be their top choice, unless it's Google AdWords, they just want to feature the top choice organically so their searchers have a good experience and choose them instead of Bing or other competitor search engines. They'd get nothing from a third party receiving money from you in SEO just SEM. Most website builders don't keep up with all their changes so it can be a daunting task. I know that our recommendations largely come with money back guarantees on certain performance factors and that goes a long way for a new company giving us a chance.

Also, 10 years of history of Google is definitely helpful, but when Google makes changes like "How fast does this site load on 3g speed," your older site may not be friendly to what they now deem important.

Thanks. What's the typical going rate for what I am looking for?

I think you've only really mentioned that you'd like 1/3rd of your business coming from the internet. Without knowing many other variables that come with that I have no idea. What cities & keywords you are targeting? How many clients is a 1/3rd? Does the search traffic warrant that being possible? etc. But I think you can find out much cheaper than $1,500 just to find out!

When the site was redesigned, was it SEO optimized at the time?

This was my reply to an SEO question on the board over the summer. There are a lot of things you can do yourself (or have your web person do) to better your SERP positioning before spending a ton of money on an SEO firm.

It sounds like we're combining or speaking to two different things. I've been in marketing and advertising my entire career, but only in the last year have I transitioned to full digital (that's my disclaimer):

SEO - Search engine optimization - This involves revising YOUR WEBSITE to perform better and pop in search results. There is a content and linking strategy that is applied to revise your content, who you link out to, etc. All of which moves you up in results.

SEM - Search engine marketing - This is paid placements, largely through Google. This is having ads come up on SEARCH RESULTS PAGES that point to your website.

There are some pretty standard things you can do yourself on each which should help quite a bit. Lots of content out there to find and review (the Adwords certification videos are actually very helpful for both).

But the biggest thing is that SEO is organic, while SEM is paid. (Unless, of course you pay someone to optimize your page for SEO). I get the sense that the company you talked to would be doing both?

But it's very important to understand exactly what they'd be doing. Are they running your adwords account? How much of the cost goes to actual search each month vs. their time in managing? For SEO, is there one revision to the site and that's it, or are their built in updates every quarter? Etc...
