My parents live outside of Ponchatoula on about 40 acres of family land. The cable company's access point is at the beginning of their private driveway and my parents are at the end of the driveway, which is approximately 1000- 1200 ft from the access point. My aunt and grandma both have access to cable internet from their homes (approximately 600 ft from the access point) but apparently the run to my parents is to long and the cable company is unwilling or unable to run a line to their house. Every house around them has charter internet and they are having to use Verizon internet and having a cap of 5gb a month.

My question is, what kind of options are out there to get them access to high speed internet? Can we run a line or is there a wireless option we could use on the property amongst the family?

Is there clear line of site between the house or a bunch of trees in the way?

You could possibly do a wireless point to point for $500 or so. You could also get fiber run, but it will cost you.

There is line of sight from my parents to my aunts house which is across a large pond.

If it's cable internet, can't you just run a length of RG6 from the access point to the box on the side of the house? Certainly not ideal and you'd need to bury it but you can get 500 feet for $50 at Lowes.

Wouldn't the signal degrade over that length of cable? I have been reading up on several options and maybe the wireless may be the best.

My house is a bit over 1000' from the roadway... too far for Cox to run their line back there, and they want $5000 to run a new feeder line and amp.

That's what I have. I ran the cable modem to a shed on my property within the 300' Cox said they could install it. And set up the wireless link with the Nanostations. I get pretty much the same speed I do at the modem with this setup and couldn't be more pleased with it. Note that this isn't a wifi range extender or anything of that type... it's more like running an ethernet cable between the modem and router, only in this case the cable is the two Nanostations.

Yes, you can't run RG6 that far... You can't run RG11 which is bigger that far either. The signal would be crap.
