Heat is certainly an issue, but you still can't beat a plasma for watching sports. The main issue with plasma, however, is energy consumption. There is no money going into further development because they're being banned in many places around the world.

I'm not aware of any bans on plasmas. To meet energy standards, they did have to get more aggressive with the ABL circuit to curb power consumption in bright scenes, but that's not why they're giving up on plasma. They're giving up on plasma mainly because they can't make it do 4K, and 4K is where they see the profits coming from the next few years. They've gone all-in on 4K. A few years ago, it was 3D.

Samsung Obituary

Panasonic Obituary

Now all that's left is LG, and their plasmas are worse than LCDs from what I've heard.

welcome to 2003.

plasma is heavy, suffers burn-in (yes, it still does despite all the technical rube goldberg hacks to get around this fatal flaw) and quite frankly no R&D is going into this outdated tech.

why is it a surprise this expensive tech is being dropped in favor of lightweight and paper-thin OLED and other technologies?

eta you can't curve a plasma

I have a Pioneer Kuro plasma that I bought 5 years ago. I wouldn't trade it for anything currently available on the market. The picture is stunning. Yes, it's heavier than LED or LCD TV's but it's been hanging on a wall since I purchased it. It's not like I'm going to move it around every week. I've never had an issue with burn in at all.

I love how CAD always ejects out of threads when people with actual true knowledge drop in and share knowledge instead of the first paragraph they memorized from an Ars Technica article they read on the subject.

Thanks for the SME's for dropping in and clearing off the riff raff...

Ultimately, IR is not a huge problem unless you have a particularly bad sample and you leave it on ESPN or something else with static logos all day. If you watch a variety of material, it's usually not a problem.

The average user doesn't want to have to worry about that shite.

RIP, Samsung plasma. I have one and it's by far the best screen I've owned.

Had Panasonic Plasma monitor for years till I actually knocked it off cabinet. Got a high end LED recently. It's not even close to as good a picture as the Plasma was. And the glare is terrible.

When I was shopping for TVs recently the LCD seemed to have the best picture. I ended up buying my MDs 60 inch, which I am pleased with but I want at least a 70 by football season. Could someone please tell me pros and cons as far as LCDs and LEDs go.

LCDs pretty much all look great in bright showrooms. Where they fall apart is when you get them home in a dark room. (Obvious joke goes here.)

LED refers to the backlight. The panel is still LCD. The backlight used to be fluorescent tubes running behind the panel, but LEDs use less power and allow the super-thin (but not so good PQ) edge-lit sets. This year there is a small move back to putting the LEDs behind the panel and implementing FALD, but you will pay out the arse for sets with enough dimming zones to begin to approach plasma quality.

The problem with LCD is that the cells don't emit light. They filter light that is shown from behind them or from the edges with the help of light guides. To show black, they have to block that light, and they're not good at that at all, or the set can dim the light source, but that always introduces artifacts including blooming and brightness fluctuations. Plasma and CRTs work differently, using phosphors that emit light themselves, and they can get much closer to true black. OLED also emits light itself and can get black down to near zero.

Really? Hmm let's see.. I said:

-plasma still suffers image burn in/image retention..whatever you want to call it.. It does
-plasma is heavy as shite and uses a ton of power.. It is and does
-plasma can't do 4k
-plasma can't curve or handle any flexibility
-manufacturers are giving up on plasma

Which of those was incorrect again?

This is right around the corner. 10 years ago people were all saying an LCD couldn't be built larger than 20 inches without many dead pixels and it would cost $150,000 to build a 60"

Y'all enjoy last century's plasma while you still can.

Why would I want to worry about this at all??

You think it's acceptable to have to watch the LSU game with shite on the screen because your kids watched cartoon network all day the day before??

So what if it goes away in a week. What happens when you leave the TV on ESPN news all day again a few days later?

Eta go to best buy and look at all their plasmas. I bet you $100 there's more than one with some fricked up IR going on.

Clearly, putting up with it for the PQ advantages is not worth it to you, so like I said to the other guy who redundantly pointed out what I thought I was saying implicitly, that "average people don't want to put up with this shite," and that plasma isn't appropriate for all applications, "Agree".
