I use Carbonite mirror image (and backup). My old computer is failing and I have a new computer.

The computer guy tells me that they cannot use mirror image to get the new computer going with all of the programs I have paid for. I don't want to have to buy the programs again. I thought mirror image was designed so that you could restore your computer without having to buy new programs?

Is there a way to use my drive mirror image to get my hard drive in my new computer to match the one I have now?

Old computer: XP
New Computer: 7

Thanks. I am very non-tech.

I haven't fricked with system images in a while, but doesn't Windows 7 have a feature where you can migrate your old shite from an old computer?

Sorry, I glazed over this...Not all programs install in the same location in 7 as they did in XP, especially if you bump to a 64bit version of 7..This is what they mean by needing to get the programs again..I am interested though in what you own that you would have to pay for again..

mirror images are to replace hard drives on identical systems, not on new systems.
any time a new system is built, its highly recommended to do a clean install. as for re-installing programs you have paid for - you will need the installer .exe file to reinstall on the new system.

Thanks for all the informative responses.

Looks like I will be paying for about four licenses, which is not bad.
