So im tired of my external hard drives failing on me and need a new route for external storage. This is for a work computer so deals with big files that fill up the internal ssd pretty quickly. Also can't tamper with the laptop and install bigger hard drives so thats out.

Basically just looking at 128GB options and deciding on something I can just leave either in the USB ports or the sd card slot. Looking for something that wont fail!

already bout this guy:

but wondering if i should go more along the micro route

Work computer? Why not store it on a file server?

Server is slow and the software I use takes forever to load from a server

There is no such thing, and I'm not sure you'll have better luck with thumb drives and sd cards than with hdd's.

You can't prevent failure. You can only prepare for it with redundancy, and the best way to handle that is with a server.

If your server is slower than microsd, something is terribly, terribly wrong.

Those microSD cards are actually pretty fast nowadays. Transfer speeds of 50-90 MB/s (real world) in the better ones, which would contend even with a local network. That Samsung SD card has very low write speed, though, which I imagine will be important for a backup solution. OP should look into SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards... Or maybe put an SSD into an enclosure.
