Do you have an infrared extender for the equipment in the closet? Are any of the remotes RF only?

No I don't have anything yet. DirectTV is only RF remote but I believe it's also IR

I use Logitech Harmony remotes, a Model 880 for my main TV that that feeds sound to my receiver. It can control up to 8 devices and send multiple commands to the different devices with one button press. For example, to watch satellite TV you can power on the TV, the satellite box, and the receiver, then switch inputs on either the TV or the receiver. It's discontinued but replaced by the Model 650 which sells on Amazon for $66. You would also need an infrared extender to send commands to the equipment in the closet, probably around fifty bucks. The transmitter receives the infrared commands and relays them by RF to the receiver in the closet which converts them back to infrared.
Logitech maintains an extensive library of devices and lets you tweak which buttons to use, etc. You can also do custom commands that will appear on the screen of the remote.

Fantastic device.
I guess if you're the only one using it. Personally I'd rather have a dedicated remote that remains with the TV and lets other people watch it even if I'm not there.

#1, it does have a dedicated remote. I use it 90% of the time.
#2, the remote can be purchased solo, so if your three year old decides to use it as a hammer, you don't have to shell out $130 for a completely new system.
#3, the app is not dedicated to a single user. Its set up on my wifes phone too.
Theres also an RF extender included with the setup. Its bluetooth compatible so itll run your playstation as well.

Thanks elites. Question about that Hub. My closet is a linen closet so it's not very deep. Thus my devices are almost up against the door. Will that cause problems for that hub getting the IR signal to the front of the device?

It shouldn't. The sensor is pretty small.
One more thing, this system uses your wireless network. So if your routers out, it wont work.

I just got the Harmony Elite, pricey, but serves as a full smart-home hub along with control of home theater devices. Third harmony I have purchased and will never go back.

Does anyone have the elite? How does it compare to the Ultimate home? Does it fix all the stuff that the Ultimate has wrong with it?

As I said above, I just purchased the Elite. Didn't have the ultimate before, but what sort of "stuff" does the ultimate have wrong with it and maybe I can help?
