Question about Windows 10 and older programs

If I attempt to install older stuff on my Win 10 laptop that were hacked or cracked back in the early 2000's just what can I expect? I'm sure I'll get a warnings of one sort or another, but can I expect them to run or will Windows thwart me and connect with Redmond and search some vast database to shut down any cracked program?
Yes, I wear a tinfoil hat as far as Microsoft goes...

I haven't encountered that issue at all, but none of the software on my machine is quite that old.

Microsoft can disable your pirated games and illegal hardware

Section 7b – or “Updates to the Services or Software, and Changes to These Terms” – of Microsoft’s Services EULA stipulates that it “may automatically check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices.”
I've read this before, and I've also read that the article is not accurate. The quoted text is from the Microsoft Services Agreement, the EULA. That is a pretty big distinction when we're talking about pirated third-party software.

Microsoft has disabled and uninstalled the old cisco vpn client on one of my laptops running 10. It is not counterfeit, and we were able to reinstall with a workaround. But that program was specifically targeted and that pretty much verifies the substance of the article to me.

It probably did so because it wasn't directly compatible with win 10. It did the same to my installed version of VMware. That has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Windows 10 is pretty much the same thing as windows 7 and 8. Works fine on all 3.

It is a short step from uninstalling a program because it is arbitrarily deemed incompatible to uninstalling a program because Microsoft doesn't like how you choose to use it.

Good! Now I can upgrade my sister's Win7 PC.
Even though I hide the Win10 update (KB3035583),
Microsoft slips it into the next monthly updates and overrides my "hide" request.
