My parents are wanting to move away from AT&T. They are no longer under contract and want to switch to Verizon. I said I would help them with this since they are technologically challenged. Both want the new iPhone.

With Verizon, can they buy the new iPhone outright as opposed to a month-to-month lease agreement? If the answer is yes, is a contract still required with Verizon? Or is there a better and more cost efficient option I should look at for them?

yes, they can buy the iphone outright off contract. new verizon plan isn't a traditional contract - you can leave anytime, just pay off the phone. i don't know why you would buy the phone outright if you go this way, though. it's a 0% interest loan.

depending on how much data your parents use, there may be better options in the mvno's. check out straight talk. if they are buying new phones outright, they could get them and use on whatever plan they want. they could try a few different ones out to see what works for them by simply changing the sim card

Will, is there a specific reason they are moving away from AT&T? Are they in Louisiana or somewhere more easterly along the Gulf Coast?

I am asking b/c of coverage. Remember AT&T bought the largest cellular provider (Cingular) down here years ago and have strong coverage. I cannot comment on Verizon as I don't know many people on it. (But avoid Sprint at all costs.)

As expensive as the phones are today, the upfront cost of the phones are not an issue for my parents. They are of the mindset of paying for it and being done with it. They don't like "bill" so to speak. And given they are set in their ways, I won't be able to change their thought process.

They travel a fairly good bit, often times to remote areas. Plus they live in a very rural area as it is now. I figured Verizon would offer them the best coverage since they are dissatisfied with AT&T (which is 2nd best in terms of coverage).

Like many others, they lost cell service during the recent flooding and are unhappy with AT&T customer service and appropriate (or lack thereof) response.

They live in Baton Rouge, but in a very rural neighborhood. My mom lost all of her voice mails once service was restored from AT&T.

The majority of people that I have spoken with all speak very highly with regard to Verizon and their coverage provided. I actually have Sprint and while it is no AT&T or Verizon, it works for me and my wife. The price is significantly better than those two providers and I can use at much data as I want. Plus, with the plan that I am on, I can purchase a new phone at a discounted rate providing I agree to a two-year term. All in all, Sprint used to be absolutely terrible 3 to 5 years ago. Today, not so much. It's better, but no where near the two leaders in our area. But for the price, I can deal with it.

Best tip I can give is to have someone with a newer model iPhone w/ Verizon go to their home and test signal strength inside and outside and verify they are getting a stronger/more reliable signal. Never rely on coverage maps. I also pay outright as I hate bills as well. Remember, if they pay outright, they will get $15 (or more according to their data plan) off service per phone per month w/ AT&T.

BTW, I'm not trying to talk you into them staying w/ AT&T by any means. I just know that except for the recent flood in BR, I have never lost coverage and it's the only service that works at our camp in the middle of nowhere (Perry Co., MS). Also, remember the new iPhones support more bands, so Verizon may work fine or better.

And yes, my wife switched from Sprint (her work phone) when she left 2 years ago, so service is probably substantially better now.

i live in LA and have Verizon. my service/reception is stellar 99% of the time. i switched from ATT a couple years ago due to spotty coverage.

i suggested mvno's because, from what i can tell, the only downside to the big networks is lte speed and lower data caps. there are several that use verizon towers, but vz caps the speed of their mvno's and they offer less data.

with verizon, it looks like it will be $90/mo with 2 iphones on either regular or prepaid plan with 4gb data. you can expect to save about $20 on that with a mvno. for 2 phones, it may not be worth the hassle (that's what has kept me from switching).

I've been with Verizon since 1999. I know things have changed a lot since then, but I've never had issues during tailgating or Mardi Gras, while others had problems with overloaded Cingular towers during peak population per area times.

I have heard of this happening also. Verizon must've really made a push into the Gulf Coast area or it's simply that there are more people w/ AT&T here (or both).

I've got to say, I was very surprised when AT&T knocked half off the bill automatically & we lost svc for maybe a day or two.

My nephew came down from the Nebraska (he has Verizon) and his LTE speed was unbelievably fast.
