So bear with me a little bit as I'm asking this question for a friend who is asking for another friend but I figured this would be the best place to ask so TIA

this persons brother died last week and her brother had an iTunes library with over 23,000 songs on it (idk the actual size of this in MB terms but I can find out). They have his login and password so they can access the cloud he has the songs stored on but would like to be able to download the songs to an external hardrive so they could be easily transported from place to place, plugged in and played.

Now I don't even know if that's possible, I suggested they put them on an iPod or a iPad and they claim there isn't enough space on either of those potential devices for this many songs which is hard for me to believe. I'm decent with computers but not great so if it actually is possible to put these songs on an external hardrive how exactly would I go about doing it?

I'm really trying to help them out cause the brother was only in his early 40s and died suddenly

Thanks again

I would think you'd have to download the whole library onto a computer, and then transfer over to a hard drive.

Yeah I don't see any way a library that big fits on any of the typical ipod/ipad considering a library that big is probably easily over 175GB.

But I'm curious since I'm about to switch to a new computer myself, when you sign into iTunes from another computer, does all that music just show up automatically without having to move the files themselves over? That's assuming he used iTunes match.

Really sorry for your friend's loss.

Back in my MP3 ripping days about 4 MB per song is what I remember. 23,000 x 4 = 92,000 MB which is roughly 90 GB, so that is too much for your standard iPod.

I've never used iTunes for this, but looking at this post, if you log into his account using iTunes you can download the songs from there just by right clicking on the song and choosing download.

Q:Is there any way to download all of my iTunes Match music in one go on iTunes OS X?

I've tried selecting all then clicking the little iCloud Button.

I've also tried generating an Automator 'Watch me do' script, but that fails because the iCloud buttons have not been given a namespace selector, meaning the script errors out.

Does anyone know how this could be achieved? I have over 2,000 songs and don't want to click the button individually for each one.

A:Have you tried selecting all and then selecting download from the right-click context menu?

Just use an external hard drive. You can copy the whole iTunes music library on to it if you have enough space. It's the easiest way I've encountered. Maybe if he has iTunes match attached to the account, then you might be able to login and download it to another computer. I have iTunes match but I'm not sure of the capabilities of it.

As far as downloading music automatically when you login to a new computer, I think you can sync your purchases but you won't be able to transfer your other music that isn't purchased I believe. I could be wrong so if anyone sees this answer and wants to add to it then please do.

I believe you are correct on that issue, you can fairly easily sync any purchased music but if you didn't buy it it won't carry over. Fairly easy to fix though cause you can just load the songs onto a flash drive then load them into your iTunes library manually on your new computer. It takes some jumping around in your files but I can be done

But back to my OP, so it is possible just to copy an entire iTunes library over to a hardrive just like you could any other files? Then when you plugged the external hard drive into a new computer to play the music what would you do? Just go to the external in my computer and select the song you wanted to play and it should work that way?

I transferred my songs by copying the music library folder to the hard drive and then placing the music in the same iTunes music folder on the other computer.

OP you may have your answer already, but wanted to drop this here. I, being neurotic, still physically back up my entire iTunes library. I have quite a bit of music from physical CDs back before my gen 1 iPod, so not everything in my library is cloud accessible. Plus, you know how long it takes to download digital copies of movies? If/when I replace my PC, I don't have to redownload all that data. I just drag it over to my desktop, then tell iTunes to use that folder for media, and I'm done.

My library is stored on my hard drive and backed up to a 2TB portable drive. If your friend has 23K songs on iTunes accessible via iCloud, you can log in to an iTunes account on a computer and let it download all songs. Then, just copy the library over to a portable hard drive. FWIW, my library shows up and is playable through my PS3 without any 3rd party software when Home Sharing is turned on. Of course you can also stream it through your iDevices, apple TV, etc.

Hope that helps.

I would just make sure that all of the music is downloaded to his original computer or another computer that has that kind of space. Then copy the files to an external HD.

This circumvents using iTunes to upload/download stuff and dealing with iTunes Match/Apple Music.
