AT&T's third-party insurance company, Asurion, will replace and mail you a new phone if you claim it. They decide what kind of new iPhone you get...so here's my question, can you upgrade the iphone they mail you by going to a store? I have a 6+ and they are mailing me a 7. But I like the bigger screen and would like to upgrade the mailed device to a 7+ at either AT&T or the Apple Store before I make the switch. Does anyone know if this is possible? TIA!

Won't happen, you'll leave the store upset. Save your time.

I dropped a phone a few months ago and it was replaced thru assurion and I had no problem when I upgraded about a month ago.

Maybe I have misunderstood the question.

What kind of shite is that? Seems like they should have to replace with a like phone.

Well they are supposed to replace the phone with as close to equivalent that they have; they apparently had no more 6+ in stock, so the 7 is the best they could do I guess. I shouldn't complain, as my 6+ is a 64G and they are sending me a 7 that's a 256G (RV: $849). I am going to see if AT&T will let me "upgrade" to a 7+ that's 128G and retails for only $20 more. I'd rather have a bigger screen than more storage. I keep all pics backed up on Dropbox and even 128G is big.

the closest equivalent to a 6+ is a 7+.

Well yeah, they must have not had the 6+ or 7+ in stock.

ETA: I'm just curious how this convo will go:

Me: "Hi. I was sent this unopened 7. Can I pay $20 to exchange it for the 7+ (with lesser storage)?"

What will they say?

They won't because its through their insurance and not ATT.

Might be able to sell it or upgrade with the next plan and trade it in though.

I doubt they go for that. I would really raise hell with the insurance company. Thats like paying to insure a cadillac and them saying we are only paying for a prius. You paid to insure the larger screen.

You can call asurion back within the 1st 7 days of receiving the replacement and say the 7 is not good enough and they will send a 7+ when one becomes available. Just say the screen is to small and it's not comparable to what you previously had. They will accommodate you.

If they are out of stock still, ask for what is called a purchase for reimbursement. You can buy the 7+ and they will mail you a check for the retail value minus the deductible.

Asurion is your only option. AT&T and Apple will do nothing to help.
