I went to the att store today to upgrade my phone that I paid off early last year. According to the sales rep I talked to even though I paid it off early I wasn't eligible for an upgrade until June when my contract ends. How can this be since the phone is paid off and the ATT app clearly says I have an upgrade available?

Don't go through the stores, go through the web site.

Because you're on a two year contract, you have to live it out. Yes, the phone is paid off but your contract isn't expired until June. Go into any AT&T and most managers will waive the fee. I think for June, the ETF should be somewhere near 125 or so?

Sales rep was wrong

That's the whole point of the next plan. You can upgrade whenever you want by either:

Paying off the phone balance of the phone (keeping you old phone)

OR paying off the balance of the commitment. This is a lower balance than your old phone but you have to return the old phone.

We still have plenty of customers on the two year contract which is where the phone is paid off but you can't upgrade until you hit your two years. Like I said, there is probably an ETF but talk to any manager and most will waive it for you.

WTF is the point of signing a contract if you paid full price for a phone and own it?

Yeah that was my thinking too. ATT seems to think they have the market cornered or something. Competition is a beautiful thing and if I wasn't looking for an excuse to switch to another carrier, I've found one anyway.

Wut? Everyone did this, it's why we got away from it and use the Next plan now. Where have you been though? Like every single carrier did two year contracts.
