guess which month they bumped me.

can i tell the fricking difference visually when watching netflix? no.

netflix just grabs whatever bandwidth is available.

i cant tell it to play 'Maya the Bee' in SD for my 9 month old so i'm guessing its streaming in glorious BANDWIDTH GOBBLING 1080p.

I guess i need to turn off 'auto play next episode' as well.

frick comcast.

eta and whoever says 'torrents' i would like to point out i haven't had time to log into any torrent sites in 5 months or so and i'm not seeding anything (uTorrent isn't running).

THIS IS ALL NETFLIX (at least i suspect that's what it is), youtube, and streaming music.

are we supposed to know when they upgraded you? Looks like August is going to be pretty low. Do you get charged per GB or something? Are your chilrens watching more stuff during the summer months, perchance?

TL;DR WHAT THE frick IS THE PROBLEM?

June 1 i was upgraded.

my tv habits haven't changed.

my overages went WAY UP.

i can't control netflix, there's no setting to 'throttle quality' i can set locally.

you are next.

There are four data usage settings to choose from. Each estimate below is per stream:

Low (0.3 GB per hour)
Medium (SD: 0.7 GB per hour)
High (Best video quality, up to 3 GB per hour for HD and 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD)
Auto (Adjusts automatically to deliver the highest possible quality, based on your current Internet connection speed)

To select a setting that works best for your Internet plan, navigate to the Your Account page and select Playback settings in the Your Profile section. It can take up to 8 hours for these changes to take effect. Restricting data usage may effect video quality while watching Netflix.

You can also turn off playing the next episode automatically from that screen.

my man!

i wonder if i can limit it by profile? the kids get SD and I get HD.

yep, at 6GB/hour (often the kids are watching netflix downstairs while we're watching it upstairs) i can see taht 300GB getting eat through in no time flat.

That's 24GB every 4 hours (if 2 tvs are left 'running') or nearly 50gb every 8 hours.

you add 16 days of 4 hour usage and you're at nearly 400GB.

its definitely netflix thats the problem.

now that i realize this is effectively 'leaving the water running' i'll have to redo those settings to take this in account.

as you can see from the chart, this issue skyrocketed after June 1 when i was upgraded to 75Mbps.

Yes, you get the same set of options for each profile, just change which profile is "active" when you're on the Netflix site and then go to Your Account.

Overages on 75 mbps hardwire service are borderline criminal. You could exhaust that in 9 hours at full speed. So basically, they're saying you can use the speed you purchased for 1.25% of the month.

That's not as bad as the mere minutes you can use full speed cell data.

That's fricking ridiculous. I think you need to direct all of your Amazon hate at Comcast instead.

I dread the day Cox starts charging for overages. I would've owed them hundreds more in the last couple of years.

Imagine you just bought 2 brand new shiny 4K tv's for Christmas and now you are watching 'house of cards' in glorious 4K.

"7 GB per hour for Ultra HD"

You watch all 13 episodes of HoC year 3 @ a cost of NINETY ONE GIGABYTES (91) or almost a full 1/3 of your monthly data (not including ANYTHING ELSE running on your other 10 PCs)

You watch all 3 seasons and your'e at 271GB (almost your entire month's allotment) and you still have the rest of the month to go.

yep, comcast just found a way to frick netflix users without the backlash from throttling them.

they've taken the exact opposite approach now..suddenly the floodgates are open for MUCH higher bandwidth!

like magic! as soon as they figured out how effective the bandwidth cap would be ($$$$) they suddenly had a major technological breakthrough and doubled everyone's speeds.

i know they say 75 but speedtest routinely displays 95+ for me.

funniest thing is the SO and i havent actually watched more than a couple shows in 2-3 months. we have caught maybe the first 3 eps of the new true detective and that's it.

we've repainted the entire house, dealt with a major algae outbreak in the pool and tried to get 3 kids back to school.

thats what pisses me off even more.

now we do stream the hell out of google music at the pool...

You just need a little self-control. You sound like a woman who spends hundreds of dollars at a shoe sale because of all the money she's "saving".

If you just use it to buy the things you need, you will actually save time and money.

There's backlash, and you should be contributing to that backlash.

We've discussed before on this board how caps are very similar to throttling in terms of their effect on streaming video services. It's an anti-competitive practice.
