PS3 Help

My little boy has a PS3, it is in a well ventilated area. I vacuum the vents monthly at least, it doesn't seem to go into turbo mode with fans kicked on. It can sit on the home menu or go onto the playstore for hours. However, when he attempts to play a racing game (which is all he uses it for) it will play for anywhere between 3-5 minutes before beeping twice and shutting off. It does not appear to be running hot, and the HDD did not sound like it was under a heavy load.
Do any of you techies know what may be the culprit? I know the boards can need to be reballed, the thermal paste is shite, but before I tear it apart and go about resoldering and applying new paste could it be a hardware issue? Power Supply not performing under a load, Blu Ray error, or HDD issue?!?
Thanks.
PS, before it starts I know I should just buy a PS4, but he already has 4 or 5 games and a wheel for the PS3. Not to mention he likes to play NCAA and recreate games we watch on the weekends.

Is it an original PS3 or a slim?

It's one of the fat ones. 80GB I believe. I got it new in '08, I was never a gamer but used it for Netflix, movies, and would play occasionally with friends. Only issue I have ever had with it was a couple of years ago my son stuck four dvd's in it and I had to buy a new player in it. Other than that he plays it for 3-4 hours a week on the weekends.

This. I have the original fat and it has to be the last working fat left. I keep waiting for it to kill on me at any moment.

Mine still works. It's an original 60GB with backwards compatibility. It sounds like a jet engine when it's running.

Same here but I did upgrade to a 500GB HDD several years ago and just got a PS4 so I can move the noise machine into the kid's room.

So I'm guessing I should just reball and apply thermal paste and see where that gets me?

I would cut your losses. You can find a newer slim model for 1-200 bucks on eBay.

Yea, I guess I just wanted to keep the old girl running. If the the reball and paste, maybe $15, don't cut it I may just have to get him a PS4 for his birthday in a month. He has a SNES and XBox in the game room anyway, they just aren't as realistic.

I did the thermal paste on mine and then traded it in to GameStop.Didn`t know how long it would last. They had double credit trade in or something like that when I did it.
Went and bought the super slim and it`s been perfect.
Oh, and I had screws left over after I put it back together.

I have a feeling I will too. I have only been to the level with the power supply and blu-ray, but have taken electronics apart in the past so I don't expect it will be too intimidating.
Since you've done it before did you have to use a pick and hook set? I have one, but honestly don't remember the last time I used it and whether it's in a junk drawer or a tool box.

I don`t know what that is.
I just remember using a small Phillips screwdriver, a heat gun, a credit card to smear thermal paste.
There are some ribbons to deal with that can be a little challenging for a not so tech friendly guy(such as myself).

I had the same problem on a fat a few years ago. All I did was deep clean and re apply the thermal paste, and it lasted until I got rid of it for a slim.

I had an original 40 GB (was that a thing?) that had the same thing happen about 18 months ago. Still sitting in the box, as we used it for about 90% streaming anyway and a Fire TV fixed that.

If you haven`t looked, there are you tube videos that show you step by step pretty much. I followed one of those.
It`s worth a shot for your son. If it doesn't work, you could send it to sony. Not sure how much that is now. It used to be $100.
Good Luck

I'll check those out.

$15 or less and an hour of my weekend. Plus he'll be intrigued to see the inside of it I'm sure. I will probably need to lock my tools up after the fact. If not every little thing not working right will be apart or half put back together. Because that's how daddy fixed it.
quote:Nah, I'll just find him a refurb or buy him a PS4 for his Bday next month. I think I saw Sony is $150 for the fix. Gamestop is $130 for a refurb 500GB slim and $300 for a 500GB PS4. Though hopefully this fix can last me a few months so Santa can replace it. I already have a deposit down on his bday gift. Our bulldog has lymphoma and ~3 months to go, so the wife and I found a tri-colored english puppy that will be ready the week of his bday to pick up.
If it doesn't work, you could send it to sony.

If its the ylod of death the paste is a short term fix. A lead reball is a whole lot better option.
