Can anyone recommend a sub 500.00 TV that won't kick off after 5 years?

I'm just sick of paying for crap that breaks. I'm not looking for the best picture or sound. Just looking for one that'll last.

Hate to tell you, but you get what you pay for. You're not gonna find anything great under 500$. Just pony and get something that will last you awhile.

I Sony has best rep. They are also priced a little higher, but it might be worth it. I'm just kind of fed up with manufacturers producing electronics with short shelf lives.

samsung, vizio, seiki

consumers reports should still have data on repair record of tv's

been a while since I looked....usually at cars n vcrs back in the day....well it was more than that but you get the idea

to me it seems like samsung makes the best tvs.. and i am in no way a samsung fan.

got a 2008-2009 samsung running strong still.

but samsung can also be pricey.

i also have all vizios. if you get a new TV you can purchase a 5 year warranty for under 100 with it that should cover all that.. and in home repair. but like you said.. you don't want something that would go out in 5 years any ways.. i got vizios because of affordability yet still brand name.. but i can't verify how long they will last.. just bought them last year and this year.

what size TV were you looking at?

Only looking at 42". I don't try to keep the newest tech, I just want reliability.

I've had a Sony for around 10 years and it's still awesome. However it sure wasn't under $500.

I've had issues with two LGs. Just stopped working. IO now have two Panasonics and I think they are the best bang/buck going.

for your budget, i'd say vizio. We have a 6yo vizio that is still going strong. also have a 5yo samsung, but paid twice as much for the samsung (it's a higher end model tv than the vizio).

I'm going to take a different perspective. My 5 year old LG developed a green line, which gave me an excuse to move it to the porch (I can tolerate a lot more outside). When I went out shopping for a new (60"), I found a LG for around $500-$600 (I think) vs comparable higher end models over $1000.

For essentially half the price, I have as good of a picture (as far as my untrained eye can tell). Let's assume it dies in 5 years, I could buy another for $500. The higher end models may last twice as long, but in 10 years, it's going to be outdated anyways.

As for your question, I would go with one of the better brands and just not get the added bells and whistles. Do you really need an insane amount of hertz?

Yikes!!! Bought my LG in 2009. Great picture; no issues.

Is this an Alabama thing with bad LG's?

After reading up, I think it has blown capacitors. I took it to place for a look. If they can fix it for less than a hundred I'll keep it a bit longer. If not I'll be out a 30.00 diagnostic fee. Then I'll look at a new tv.

Honestly I'd buy one with no bells and whistles if it would last. Picture quality had never been a big deal to me. My eyes aren't that great anyway. If it weren't my wife wanting the flat screen I'd still be using the 20 yo crt that's in one of the kid's rooms.
