i got one, i have a nice expensive system that controls my entertainment system, security, temp, and locks, i have stayed away from the light switches cause they are expensive.

Im going to set up with WINK system because the existing system i have now has to be set up by a licensed dealer, so i cant fool with it.

Im going to keep my system because it controls my entertainment system but im going to set up this so i can mess around with settings.

Same.

My hub is sitting in my closet waiting for Cad's "Wink Hub for Retards" guide to become available.

sorry guys..been busy. y'all are gonna run me out of town on a rail if this doesn't go as planned.

i'm working with the guy who has the android app; actually told him i'm willing to sacrifice 2 of my hubs to the cause if we can get his tool to work.

i have one rooted hub, but its not the best experience because of the fact i have to roll back the wink app on my phone to add devices.

with nash's android app, if he finishes the UI to add devices locally (no cloud dongle) then the firmware its running is less relevant since you can go back & forth between the normal wink cloud..or your local hub adding directly to it.

long term you want newer firmware updates so the other piece to the puzzle is using the root admin to manually update firmware without losing root access.

ideally this app should do both; root your wink and also allow for admin updates to the firmware.

finally, the sql-injection script guy has been doing some tests and that may provide a second way to gain root; even if the firmware removed the dev user exploit.

i'm hoping for that 'one button' app so i don't have to type up a 10 page essay on the rooting process.

It works. Just don't run the update. I have 2 going right now waiting on the hacks to get better. But if he's only working on an Android app I'm SOL anyway.

Not for rooting. Just connect briefly to your hub with a friend's android device to install the scripts. I have no doubt an ios app will be developed as well if this takes off.

i didnt realize you could set it up normally and just not upgrade the firmware and it would work.

are you able to add devices?

let me ask some of the root-crowd about this. it would be nice if you can use it for now (just don't upgrade) until the rooting tools become a bit more refined/easier to use.

well i did root my EVO 4g back when you had to type commands into the bootloader, so it isnt new to me. If i root the long way will this app be any use after that?

? I thought you were the one told us it was Ok to use as long as you didn't update the software? Am I being my usual clueless self?

Mine's working fine with the couple of devices I hooked up. My bulbs are working and I'm connected to a Nest Smoke Alarm/Co2 detector. I just haven't updated.

yes. but there are 2 things you need to consider (as i understand it)

1. root using the long way provides root access but you will need to roll back your wink app on your phone to add devices since they added a check in the phone app to not add devices if you're not running v .33

2. root using long way and manually update the firmware to .33 (a little more tricky) and you're good to go.

The other options (neither of which i've confirmed) are:

3. install it as normal but don't update. if this works and you don't lose root, you might still have to run the older apk to add devices because you're in the same situation as #1

4. wait for BLINK to install the rooting scripts automatically and possibly also update the firmware parts necessary to get you current.

4 is the riskiest because you're at the mercy of a single developer and who knows if he might decide to simply abandon the project.

If #3 works, that will tide everyone here over (its a simple matter to swap APKs to add new devices and then update to the current one) until the tools get a little less funky.

I would normally have a write up by now but the baby has been keeping me very busy when I'm at home and I don't have my wink at work to play with.

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!

quote:

Eureka! I’ve pwned the patched wink hub using a SQL injection! It remains to be seen whether or not I can post the actual exploit here, I may have to post it elsewhere then link back to this.

But–if you lost root by updating incorrectly, you’ll be able to get back in very shorty… Trust me, it’s easier than the process of safely updating!

This means if you guys want to start playing with your hubs and are afraid of losing root by updating, you don't have to worry.

Now WINK may get wise at some point and close this exploit down but thats not happening with the current firmware.

Lol. I was just searching xda yesterday looking for a wink root thread. Glad to see this project steam rolling along. So it doesn't autoupdate the hub when you get it connected?
