I'm sure you lose all the fun bass, amp & stereo separation but what are the pros and cons of going this route?

my son just picked up an old military truck that he's going to use to drive to school and he wants to keep it as 'spec' as possible..meaning no aftermarket stereos or anything that wouldn't come stock.

since i pretty much use my phone ONLY for music in my 4runner, it occurs to me this might be a better way to go.

pros
- easily removable
- nothing to steal..no one would realize you have a stereo in the car
- doubles as voice-navigation, hands-free speakerphone, etc.
- can be 'hidden' in a custom console

cons
- have to take it out to charge it unless you wire it up to AC adapter
- not a true stereo..will it be loud enough at highway speeds?
- have to get to it to turn it on/off and could be problems pairing automatically with phone

so curious if anyone has actually tried this approach or had any experience with anyone who has?

You could always use an under dash mount kit or build a little console.

Also if you're fine with the idea of no head unit you could always just install an amp, a couple speakers, and plug your phone strait into the amp.

these CUCVs are bare-bones. nowhere to really hide the wires for door speakers anyway.

hell they dont even have interior lighting.

Why'd your son want a military truck?

Hope it has AC

Sounds to me like he just needs to use his phone and a Bluetooth headset.

That's awesome. What kind of condition is the motor in?

very..VERY good. it was owned by a diesel mechanic who was meticulous in keeping it running.

we're fighting a leaking radiator right now but other than that, it runs like a champ. he even installed a fuel priming pump that makes it easier to start.

My suggestion is to get a non-touchscreen deck and two good speakers. Not many connections. Not much wiring to hide. Get decent sound. Can play Bluetooth, SD/USB card stuff, or regular CDs.

Just need power, ground, antenna, and speaker wires. It's not that hard, and he can get to know about and practice wiring stuff (because you are always gonna have to do something electrical)

Eta: I don't know if you have any radiator repair shops around you, but I do here, and it's cheaper a lot of times to get that and the tranny cooler cleaned up at the same time than buying new ones

Here's a budget build that will sound pretty good:

Kenwood head unit
JBL door speakers
Either one of these two for baffles (to protect from water) LINK LINK

I'd get two spools of 14-16 AWG wire (blk and red), and run them to the radio from the battery and then to the speakers

Just looks like an old Chevy Tahoe with a shitty tan spray paint job. Whatever - to each their own.
