New TV

I'm in the process of buying a couple of new TVs. Please tell me why I should get a 4K tv or save about a grand and buy 1080p.
Obviously we have limited format in 4K but is there any reason to think that I am not going to buy a 4K tv then by the time we get content there won't be 5k or 6k.

If you're shopping on value, as you obviously are, you should probably wait to jump when the majority shifts away from you. 720p and 1080p content are going to be the dominant sources for a long time - they're going to be options, well after 4k becomes "normal" because of bandwidth.
So, until and if you feel you're missing something by not seeing 4k content, I would stay at 1080p.
Now, on the other hand, I would go ahead and settle in with your purchase in the next 12 months - because, going forward - 2016 and 2017, manufacturers are increasingly going to reserve their best features for 4k sets - you will see bare bones offerings only, particularly from the majors, in 1080p sets, as early as 2017 - you're already seeing it - and even with Vizio.
And I don't know if we're going to see mainstream "5k" or "6k" anytime soon - we're not far off from diminishing returns from a cost benefit analysis. They can still only make affordable sets so big - and higher resolutions benefit, primarily, larger sets and closer viewing distances.

I haven't bought a TV in 10 years. If buying today I would buy a 4K only because it might be another 10 before I buy another one. The prices have come down a good bit and will drop even more after the first of the year. Sony makes the best panels.
