New (Roku) Smart TV Won't Play Cable TV on Surround Sound Speakers

The surround sound speakers are connected to an older Sony DVD player. When a DVD is placed in the player, the surround sound speakers work. But they won't work when I switch to Cox cable TV. The TV has an HDMI (ARC) port and I have it connected to the Cox cable box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Help me understand. All your devices run through the DVD player then to the speakers or all devices plug into a separate sound system?

I would suggest checking audio settings on the tv. Also, run an optical cable from cox box to sound system.

If the speakers are connected to the DVD player, and the TV is directly connected to the cable box, why would you think sound should play out of the speakers? Is there an optical audio cable connecting the TV to the DVD player or something? We need more info about your setup.

Did you try to change the sound source? I have a Bluetooth headphone but have to change the source to get them to work.

You will have to run an optical audio line from the tv to the DVD surround system. The other option would be if the DVD system has an HDMI port designed to connect the cable box and then run a single HDMI to the TV. But more likely you are going to need an optical audio line.

Sorry. What other info might help? I'll try to provide. Customer service said it was a problem that my TV sends to DVD from HDMI ARC cord, but DVD not ARC compatible. DVD player is older. My surround sound speakers have 6 wires which connect to back of DVD player. Hope this helps.

Can you post pictures of the back of the DVD system? Or tell us what model it is?

Looks like (based on the diagram of the back of the unit from page 10 in the owner's manual) the only external audio input you can use is RCA. What TV do you have?

Looking at the manual online and seeing the available inputs it appears as though the only way to do this is if your TV has RCA audio outs. I kind of doubt it but maybe you got lucky.

Well not only that but you also just said you have the Cable box hooked up to the ARC port. The ARC port has to be plugged into the speaker system. And even if you did that, the audio is sent back over the ARC port only if you have the ARC port selected. You can't have input from the cable box on one HDMI port and output to the DVD player on another HDMI port.

What you need to do is get an actual receiver.

seeing the TV you will be able to route audio from your tv to the DVD system via RXA cables. However, it won't be surround. It will be 2 channel stereo. I don't know how your DVD system handles that. It could just play sound over your front L and R speakers, or it could do something where it fakes surround sound and plays it through all your speakers.

So, I went to Best Buy and they told me that I needed to buy an optical out cord, which I did. Since my DVD player does not have an optical out portal, they sold me a converter. I ran the optical out cord from back of TV into converter. Then ran red and white audio cords from the converter to back of DVD player. I was ready to celebrate rebirth of my surround sound home theater and new TV. Still nothing but silence.

Why the optical converter? Just run the Red/white RCA cables directly from your tv to the back of the DVD. No matter what you do, you are only going to get stereo sound at best from your setup unless you are playing a DVD. At least that's what I see based on the models you posted. May be time to consider an audio system upgrade.

Just looked at the TV and the DVD player and that absolutely should work. No reason for the optical converter. If it doesn't work, make sure the DVD player is set to the TV input and the television settings have analog audio output turned on.
