New iphone unable to connect to wifi

My wife got a new iPhone 6s plus today. Every time I try to connect it to our wifi I get the error message "unable to join wifi". Before I get this message I can see the wifi icon pop up at the top of the screen and then go away. My wifi isn't password protected and all other devices are able to connect just fine. I have reset network settings and I still cannot get it to connect. What an I missing here?
Edit: Fixed. It took a a lot router and phone resets but it finally connected.

How many other devices are connected? We sometimes have issues with a phone connecting if we have something streaming on the fire stick and an iPad being used. If it is just an iPhone and iPad it is fine.

At the time my phone was the only other device connected.

How old is you wifi router? Sometime, they need to be updated an faster for the newer devices.
