You're suggesting I use an editing software and fix the photos in post rather than try to get it right on the shot? Is that preferred?
It gives you the ability to adjust light and colors, you can really improve photos with this software with limited experience...
Someone posted this photo the other day on the OB
A few minutes later I had:

Here is another example

Absolutely. I only use iPhoto at the moment. It can't do anything nearly as complex as Lightroom, and yet I have taken a nice shot and turned it into something that I have been proud of.
Getting the right shot in the field is great and all, but there is so much more artistically that you can do with a great shot on your computer.

borrowlenses.com is another great site to rent lenses from for testing. Find what works best for you then buy it.

You will enjoy the 35mm 1.8, it is a great lens especially for close ups of kids.
If you are really wanting a zoom lens, I would look into this one. Nikon 80-400
It isn't a prime lens but odds are if you are using this lens you will be outdoors and wouldn't really need the prime lens. If you can afford to go for the prime I would do that. I rented this lens last year for my first air show and it did great on my d7000.

I bought Lightroom a few years ago. Adobe now has Creative Cloud which allows you to pay to use Lightroom and Photoshop for about $10/month, or an annual payment. If it's something you may want to try, I would suggest doing that. Adobe usually has a 30 day trial but that's not nearly long enough to learn Lightroom.

I recently purchased the Tamron 150-600 and am pleased with the results so far. Got some nice photos of the Heineken Regatta on St. Maarten weekend before last.

Same with me. I really need to upgrade my body. I am currently using a D90...

There are a number of tutorials on YouTube that will help. Also Lightroom can do more when it is working with a RAW file instead of a JPEG...

Lightroom is set up to get the most control out of RAW files. I don't have any examples. You can actually set the camera up to save both a RAW and JPEG photo for every picture taken. After I edit the photos in Lightroom I convert them to JPEG.

Did some reading. So it's just a more complete file to work with regardless of the software for post.
With a 24 MP camera, will a 32GB card be good?

yes, but have a spare or two for when you get lazy pulling photos from the card...
