I'm in the beginning stages of my search and wanted to come here for advice. Wife has ruled out a Mac.

$500 to $1000 for budget. Use would be paying bills, I tunes, and basic Internet surfing. I use Apple TV, And Netflix for my streaming. I do have around 7,000 songs stored on my computer now on ITunes. YouTube is streamed from my Samsung 8500 series TV's or IPhone/iPad.

Does that budget include a monitor? You don't need much to do any of that stuff.

However, as a solid out-of-the-box solution, I'd recommend something like this: LINK

It'll last a long time, and the SSD will prevent the typical OS slowdown caused by hard drive degradation/cluttering. There's probably a better deal somewhere on a different brand, but that's the general configuration I'd recommend. i5, 8GB RAM, SSD for OS, Win 10.

You could also spend less than half that and accomplish the same thing with less luxury.

That's with a monitor included.

What about the monitor with the computer built in vs the seperate monitor and tower?

Would also work fine, but inherently weaker hardware for the same price (laptop parts) and no upgradeability. But any computer will work for your purposes.

Thanks for the help. Think I'll take your specs and see what falls into my price range. Any brands to stay away from?

I'd recommend Dell for their customer service, honestly.

Actually, for what you're doing, I'd recommend a laptop and an external monitor. Any i3 or i5 laptop would do everything you want and then you can pick it up and take it with you or stow it away.
