Need Advice On A New Router For My Home
Posted on 12/27/15 at 8:22 pm

Looking for a new wireless router for my home. Speed more important than coverage. 90% of our activity is surfing and then some file transfer.
I do not mind paying a premium price if I get a good return on the investment.
Thanks.

You do realize a fancy new state of the art router is going to do little for you in terms of speed over what you are seeing now if you have a bunch of b, G and n chips in your devices that are connecting to it.

I just ordered the new Google OnHub router. Have read a lot of good things about it and how simple it is. You use the app it has to control everything which is nice.

What kind of range does that one have?

That is supposed to be its biggest strength. Read about it at the link I posted above.

I would stay away from the OnHub...
There are much better options. If you want to spend premium money for a premium results, get a Netgear Nighthawk AC. If you want to get great results for a little less money, get a TP-Link Archer Router.

i can vouch for the archer. strong signal and very fast. picked one up for $75-80 i think.

Your speed is determined by range, the stronger the signal, the faster the speed. You can only go up as fast as your wireless card can achieve.
There is a nighthawk at Costco for 89.97. It might not be there anymore but I'd look. If not, look for a Archer c7,c8,c9.

Yeah I understand but it is great for its simplicity and also it receives updates automatically all the time so it will only get better. Just an opinion.

Do range extenders work? Would you recommend one of those too?

Most consumer grade extenders will cut your max throughput in half for that segment of the network. Might not be a problem for browsing, but streaming HD could be an issue.
The better way to extend your network would be to use powerline/coax networking (if u can't run cat 5) and add a wifi access point to the area that can't get the signal.
This works wonders for me in my 3 story town home where my main router and cable modem are on the top floor. Tried all sorts of routers, extenders, etc and nothing worked consistently with devices in the basement.
Now, I have a wifi access point in the basement that is connected to router upstairs via powerline network. Even better, the powerline network gives me a hardline for my computer, tivo, roku, consoles without even to have to use wifi.

Got an archer C9 at christmas. love it. a breeze to setup and immediate coverage improvement. performance improvement as well over my old dlink as one would expect.
it handles streaming multiple 1080p media easily.

Trying to decide between the C9 for $121 on Amazon and the Nighthawk AC4 for $149
Don't have a ton of devices connected. 2 laptops, fire stick, 2 phones.
2000 sq ft house so not sure I need anything long range
