Not up to speed on the USB devices that are on the market such as Roku, Cromecast, etc.

Plain and simple- heres what im looking to do. I need to turn our upstairs play room TV into a smart tv so my kids can watch Netflix. What is most cost effective way of doing this?

I have amazon prime but never use it. I know they make a product that might be worth looking at.

Roku Stick IMO

Chromecast might be cheaper though.

Probably doesn't want to play from a phone in the kid's room. Roku stick is probably the best option.

There is something on amazon called Roku express. It's only $30. Wonder what the difference is

What about the $30 amazon stick?

You only mentioned wanting to play Netflix, but if you have Amazon Prime already, I think going with an Amazon FireTV device would be the way you'd want to go. You'll get a lot more content with Amazon Prime for free on an Amazon FireTV device.

Also, I personally prefer the Amazon device to the Roku for usability, but that's a personal preference. I have never used the FireTV Stick only the full FireTV, so I can't vouch for the stick. Stick is ~30, FireTV ~100. Neither one is gonna break the bank.

The Chromecast would be cheapest but it is controlled via a mobile app and since this is for kids, I'm guessing you'd want something with a remote. Roku Express is $30, Amazon FireTV Stick is $40. They have slightly different pros and cons but do more or less the same things so if it's just a NetFlix device go with the cheaper Roku.

Like what? I've never seen them talk about extra content exclusive to FireTV like they used to have the Prime Lending Library just for Kindles.

I have not used the Roku and didnt care for the Chromecast. I have ATV4 and Fire Stick. Based on our info Id say the Fire stick is your best option for functionality and price.

Just put Kodi on it with the Titanium add on and you should be good to go.

Fire Stick is best since you have Prime. Lots of Amazon exclusive content on Prime. My kids love the Annedroids show on there.

It is also easy to load Kodi on that device if you want.

I have all 4 major streaming devices and the Firetv is the best for your situation.

Get the Fire Stick, but also put a PIN on it for Amazon content so your kids can't purchase things. My kids ask me to come enter the password when they want to watch something on it, and that makes sure I don't get hit with $20 for them to watch a movie. You can also create a kids profile on the Netflix app on the fire stick, and it will filter out adult shows and movies. Plus an easier interface for kids to use. I've found the selection is greater on the Prime streaming. Not all is free but a vast majority of what they want to watch is. It also has different menu options built into it that will let you go to Prime kids shows and they just scroll across and select one.

If you have an Amazon Prime account - there is a whole collection of free TV Shows, Movies, etc that get published on a monthly basis, similar to Netflix. Amazon has their own original content too (Man In The High Castle being the most prominent)

Plus you can buy/rent movies from Amazon that go in your Amazon cloud and can be watched and shared on other devices.

I had mine set up from the start, but my wife turned on some TV show for them. It was only like $3, and I now have it loaded on the kindle so they can watch it, but I had to tell her to look for the price before punching in the PIN. She's not what you call tech savvy.
