thanks for the replies, sorry I didn't realize it had moved boards.
I guess I'll just shop around and try to find something I like for under $100 and then take it to AT&T. Target seems like a good bet.

if you want something more up to date, check craigslist. You'll get more bang for your buck

I don't do the new phones, either. I am still on my 4S that is 3 years old. I just bought my wife a Motorola E from Walmart for $40. I put her on the cricket service, and pay like $30 per month for two GB of data. I think the 10 GB is only $50 if you combine accounts, and do auto draft. People are stupid to pay $700 for a phone, and $100 per month to look at Tigerdroppings while at work.

Are you trying to stay with an iPhone?
no not really. I only suggested that because it's all I've had and am familiar with it, but I'm by no means committed to it. My biggest thing is cost.
With my current 4, all I can really do it text, get on the internet, and call. I can't use any of my apps because they're all too old. I can't update my OS because it says there's no room. Which btw, I have no idea how that is. I had over 200 photos and about 10 videos saved, so this morning I moved them all to my computer and deleted them from my phone. Went back and deleted all audio files I had recorded. I haven't had a single song or piece of music on my phone since I"ve had it. I have 11 total apps that I've downloaded, which doesn't really seem like THAT many. Yet in my settings it still says I just have 2.4 GB available (new OS requires 3.8).

Expensive now? They have always been expensive when you buy them outright without a subsidy.
And by "expensive" you must mean "less over 24 months than with the subsidy".

Wow that looks great! I can't believe it's brand new and only $100, why is that?
Also, I'm a complete roob when it comes to this stuff...can you explain what unlocked (and for that matter, locked) means?
ETA: nvm I looked it up, unlocked is good. Ok so just so I'm 100% certain here...I can buy that phone in the link for ~$100, then when it comes in just take it to AT&T, they'll switch my phone number over (that's very important, I have to have the same number), and let me keep my current plan?
I'm perfectly happy with my plan as is and dont' want any changes, the only thing at all about my phone that needs ot change is the actual device.

You just need a sim card to stick in it. If your phones is the same you should be able to just switch it over without going in, but I like getting new sims for a phone.

I wouldn't think the SIM from an iphone would transfer to that one though right?
And if it were to require a new one does that mean I would lose all of my contacts? That would suck.

Sorry to keep asking you so many questions but this has all been very helpful so far. As mentioned the iphone is all I've ever had so it's all I'm familiar with. It's pretty common that they'll come out with a new OS pretty frequently, so you either have to update it or not, but if you don't you lose a lot of accessibility with apps and features and whatnot.
With the BLU life one you linked on amazon that I dig, or with really any other phone than the iphone, is it the same way? Let's say I do purchase that phone and get all squared away and thigns are good...6 months from now is the OS going to be out of date already or is this a phone I can keep for 3 years with no issues?

The Blu phone ships with Kit Kat (4.4) but can upgrade to Lollipop (5.0). You should be fine on either for a while without losing support. If im not mistaken they still support Gingerbread which came out in 2010.
