Need a new cell phone, any cheap smartphone options?

I got my first smart phone in fall of 2010, it was a regular iphone 3 so it was a few years behind the newest one. I got it for $1 and it suited me just fine. That lasted a few years and when I needed a new one I got a regular 4, which was also several versions behind the latest, and again for $1.
Well it is time for me to get a new phone because I'm having some issues with my current one so I go to the AT&T store yesterday. I'm perfectly happy with my plan btw, just need a new device. Still have 2 months left on my plan too if that matters. The guy says they can do a few things and help get me a better plan, and an iphone 6, but my contract will be over 30 months including the price of the phone (which would increase my bill to higher than now). I was like, I'm not financing a cell phone for 30 months, can I not just buy an iphone 5 (or any phone really, just an older one) for under 50 bucks? He said they don't carry older models so to check best buy and similar. So I'm on best buy's site and all the older model phones they have are either cheap but have to get a new contract, or are exorbitantly expensive.
Am I doing/understanding something wrong, or have things changed THAT much in the last few years?

Nah, it's always been that way. If you want the latest technology, you either buy it outright for an obscene price, or subsidize the cost with a 2 year contract. The newer option is the Next deal where there is no contract but the price of the phone is built into your bill.
You can occasionally find a promotional deal at Best Buy for a pretty good price. I got an iPhone 5 there 2 years ago for $150, but got a $100 Visa gift card, so it came to just $50. Or check AT&T's site and they often have refurbished smartphones at a pretty good discount. Both still require a contract though.

So how would that work with me currently having a contract..is my best best to just wait 2 months and then start from scratch with the Next plan? I don't really pay attention to this stuff so I've never heard of that plan.
Honestly I thought I could just walk in, get a 5 for a few bucks and be done. I absolutely DON'T need the latest and greatest. I have like 4 apps on my phone and zero music. But my current one is just so out of date I can't even update my operating system or use any of the apps. I don't need a 6 or anythign like that, just somethign that will actually work.

The Next plan kind of sounds like a ripoff to me, and I think is more geared to people that like having a new phone all the time. It's probably that 30 month deal the guy told you about.
Check AT&T's website. You may qualify for an early upgrade, and they usually have refurbished smartphones at decent prices. I'm like you, I got the 3GS for $1 several years ago, and kept it until upgrading to the 5 2 years ago. My contract is up and I'm trying to decide what to do. The 5 still works fine though, so I'll probably just keep it a while.

Good Lord have mercy..just looked on ATT's website and an iphone 6 is like $700. Who is buying these? I had no clue phones were that expensive now, after spending a total of $2 on them the past 5 years ha.
If I find an old/used phone like on ebay or something, can I then take that to AT&T and get that updated to my phone number and make it "legit"?

yea people do that all the time with non-contract phones. Are you trying to stay with an iPhone?

Look into Republic Wireless. $250 Moto X Gen2, $27/mo 3G or $40/mo 4G unlimited service, automatically switches to WiFi when you're around one to save bandwidth.
I'm a fan.

Good Value at $250
You can buy this phone outright, bring it in to AT&T, they'll activate it for you (no charge), and whatever plan you have now stays exactly the same.
It runs off of Android though (you keep referring to your iPhones).
The best deal I know of right now is the Nexus 6 is selling for $499 right now. (Usually $650) It would work the same way as I mentioned above meaning buy the phone outright, bring to AT&T, etc.

Expensive now? They have always been expensive when you buy them outright without a subsidy.

If you just want a phone, try Craigslist.
