I have an:

LG TV
Roku
Cable box
Samsung soundbar

I know I can't get one that controls the Roku but what's the best for cable, soundbar, and TV? I'd like to be able to control the soundbar sound on the same remote I change channels on as well as switch from HDMI1 to HDMI2.

Any help is appreciated.

I have the harmony 700, it was on sale recently at best buy for $50. I think price may have went back up there. I love mine, I think it will control roku also.

I have two Logitech Harmony Ones, which Logitech discontinued (why I'll never understand) and replaced with the Harmony Touch (which I think sucks).

There are still Ones available but they are expensive as they are new old stock and somewhat sought after.

They still sell the lower end ones in the "One" form factor without a touchscreen (650, 700) that work OK.

The great thing about the One (and Touch) is a lot of special device functions that don't have a dedicated button on the remote get one on the keypad and that changes from device to device.

The website works well and it's the only device I could find that can control my Sony TV, Receiver, DVD, PS3, and cox cable box all at once.

Logitech spun off the Harmony division and I'm hoping the new company does more with it than Logitech did.

Hope this helps.

Logitech Harmony supports Roku but it's buried in the DVR device category. You'll have to tweak it a bit to get the Home and Back buttons to work properly. Roku stays on all the time so there is no power switch to worry about.

This.

There are URC that "program" similar to a Harmony and are easy to setup but limited like the Harmony. Ther are URC that have to be actually programmed through a computer that are much more flexible in their use. For your application the basic Harmony or URC will do just fine.

Just bought a Logitech Harmony One and am very happy. My family thought I was crazy for buying a $200 remote

URC is a brand. The type of the computer-programmable remote is called JP1, and the main web site is hifi-remote.com. There you will find a great forum and "device upgrades" for just about everything that uses IR. They let you use "discrete codes", i.e. buttons not found on remotes, and the typical advantage is direct access to something you would otherwise have to navigate menus to get to, or that you would have to press a button repeatedly to cycle through a list. Many manufacturers publish lists of these codes, and unlike the situation with Harmony, you don't have to beseech Logitech to add missing codes.

The RCA RCRP05BR has been a go-to JP1 remote for several years. It's about $15 at Amazon. The cable to program it will set you back $20 or less (it's a USB embedded serial cable). The software (RMIR) is free. The learning curve is not an easy one.

If you have a learning remote you like a lot, you can use a JP1 remote as an intermediary and load it with discrete codes to teach your primary remote. That pretty much turns any learning remote into a Harmony-equivalent but with potentially better layout, ergonomics, code completeness, cost, etc.

I know it's a brand. Those are the URC remotes I was referring to in my post. The programmable by PC ones are only supposed to be sold by and programmed by dealers. JP1 is a type of remote and not a specific model. The model prefixes are typically MX.

Some URC models used to be favored in the JP1 world, but like I said, the RCA is one of the current go-to ones. There is a list here:

I don't know anything about the restrictions you described, but the RCA and others are readily available at retail (I bought my first RCA at Walgreens a few years ago), and in any case, once you have the remote, you can do whatever you want with it.

Anyway, my point was, if you wanted to get into programmable remotes and liberate yourself from Logitech, it's JP1 you should look for.

I had a Harmony One for a while, and when it broke (because I dropped it) I picked up a Harmony 900 on eBay. It is the best universal remote I have ever used. The RF feature is perfect, and I am very happy with it. I considered getting one of the newer Harmony remotes, but the design and monster touch screen really turned me off to them. IMO, the design and button location is harder to use than the 900/One remotes. The 900 seems to me to be the perfect design and price point and, once configured correctly, works perfectly 99% of the time.
