So the new FY government research budget is putting a big chunk of change on hypersonic (again). Because of this, we are now looking at how to incorporate ablation models into our CFD codes for hypersonic re-entry modeling.

Well, I got to flipping through the NASA tech reports to see what they've been doing and came across this: LINK

The Charring Ablating Thermal Protection Implicit System Solver, or CATPISS.

God I hope I run into the NASA engineer that was able to get this name through all the NASA publication checks and balances.

Thought maybe some other Tech folks would appreciate this.

Abstract:

The development and verification of the Charring Ablating Thermal Protection Implicit System Solver (CATPISS) is presented. This work concentrates on the derivation and verification of the stationary grid terms in the equations that govern three-dimensional heat and mass transfer for charring thermal protection systems including pyrolysis gas flow through the porous char layer. The governing equations are discretized according to the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) with first and second order fully implicit time integrators. The governing equations are fully coupled and are solved in parallel via Newton s method, while the linear system is solved via the Generalized Minimum Residual method (GMRES). Verification results from exact solutions and Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) are presented to show spatial and temporal orders of accuracy as well as nonlinear convergence rates.

I know some of those words.

I have a meeting there in a week with the ISS team. Definitely will ask about this!

I hope you win a prize for being the first one with the balls to question that acronym.

Please update this thread if you get the scoop.

My guess is these guys were modeling re-entry heating for aerothermal demise purposes and the project managers got lazy with monitoring the tech reports.

That or there's a high up at Johnson who don't GAF.
