I've been with AT&T since 2008. My contract is up June 15th. I'm the only phone on my plan and my bill is $150 a month.

I'm always less than 7GB of data a month but AT&T only offers a 5GB and 15GB plan. I go with the 15GB plan because I would be paying that anyhow with 2GB of overage on the data.

So, my plan, is to hold out for the release of the new iPhone later this year (if my luck lets me) and I'm thinking of going with Verizon or sticking with AT&T. I live in NOLA but travel to Caney Lake to see family often and those are the two carriers who get any reception at their place.

Should I just go shop both places when I'm ready to get a new phone and just jump on their NEXT Plan or whatever plan they have where they finance the phone into the bill and all that jazz? I like to upgrade my phones every two years, I don't need the newest one each time they come out. I have a 5S now which is working fine. I'm just trying to get some opinions on experiences with both carriers and who would have the better plan for me and the NEXT program scares me even though I've read all about it.

Any input or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yikes.

I switched from Sprint (unlimited data, $160 for 2 phones) to Verizon (16GB, $150 for 2 phones) when the Galaxy S7 came out. That price includes paying the monthly fee for the device...the 2nd phone was free so with one phone your bill would be like $130 for that plan because you wouldnt have a 2nd line charge. Since you have an iPhone I think they have a promo where you can get the newest iPhone every year as well.

I'm happy I made the switch to VZW.

ETA: Have you looked at t-mobile? I didn't go with them because you can't share data across the plan, but since its only you it wouldn't matter. They have a lot of positives going for them right now.

You are letting them charge you $150 a month for a phone bill?

WTF.

I would have been on Cricket Wireless or something like that long ago

I would give Verizon a shot.

Are you the only one on your plan? If so, and you use less than 7GB of data per month, Verizon has a 6GB plan for $60/month (+20/month per line). Also, I think they offer a 12GB plan for $80/month. But I believe if you have a 10+ GB plan, you get a $25 credit each month if you get a new phone and pay for it over 24 months. For example, a 16GB iPhone 6s is $27/month. So the credit is basically paying for your phone (that is if you keep it for 2 years).

I did this last year, but I'm on a plan with 3 phones, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. You may want to check with Verizon to make sure this is correct. So if you do get the $25/month credit, getting the 12GB plan vs the 6GB plan ($20 difference) is actually cheaper (assuming you don't get a discount for the 6GB plan).

I switched from ATT to T-mobile 3 months ago and for $150/month got 4 lines unlimited talk, text, and data with 12GB/line of tethering a month and they were running the bogo offer on the S7 edges so I paid for 1 and got another and had 2 ATT I-phones that I requested unlocked and moved over. No regrets, I was on the 40GB ATT plan and paying a lot more before.

For only one phone, you'll be hard pressed to find a contract that's cheaper than prepaid. I'd jump on Straight Talk, Cricket, or something similar. Cricket has a 10GB plan for $55 with autopay.

I would look in to Project Fi if you will be the only person on the plan. I have a buddy who just switched from AT&T, and he says it is fantastic.

$10/gb used every month. if you use under your budgeted allotment you are refunded the next month and vice versa if you go over.

I like this plan because you can actually derive logic from it instead of the made-up rates they charge you at other major carriers.

Others have mentioned cricket wireless. Not sure if you like T-Mobile, but Metro PCS (runs off t mobile network) has unlimited 4G LTE data, talk, text and 8GB shared hotspot for $60 a month.

Doesn't sprint have that $75 unlimited everything plan? I'm on some variation of that currently

If she likes the phones they have. Not everyone does. She's already mentioned her iPhone.

OP, I would get T-Mob if you want to have an iPhone. Project Fi would be a great option but they only have a couple phones currently that works with them. You can get an iPhone 5 for a week for free with TMO so you can check their service and see if you like it. If the service works for you, they have the best overall packages and prices.

I forgot I started this thread. My apologies!!

Oh I have fussed at them and the last time that I talked to them, they tried to "put me on the next plan with a shitty starter flip phone that would be about $2 a month and the plan would go down to $90, but I would be under contract and use my upgrade up on the shitty starter phone"

I'm honestly thinking that I'll end up with Verizon. I just have been butt-raped by AT&T far too long.

The problem with T-Mobile is the service out at my parents. The only two carriers that really work out there are Verizon and AT&T.....It is on a lake though so I guess I could just deal with it and unplug.

I will NOT do sprint. I had them when I first got my phone and that was a hot mess.

I'll look into Project Fi, but they don't offer an iPhone?? I'm definitely an Apple girl, I am sure I would love an Android (I am all things google) but I just don't know if I can break what I know.

TMO has Wifi calling and as long as your parents have Wifi then you're fine. Otherwise, yes I understand you going with the others. But make no mistake, VZ will overcharge as well.

We have been with Verizon for many years; since getting our first cellphones and have been overall pleased with their service and coverage.

Fi usually isn't the way to go for heavy data users anyway and ~7 GB a month is still considered well above average. If you get good At&t service at your parents, you should really consider Cricket. It's basically the same as At&t and you can get 10 GB per month for $55 after autopay discount. You can also also add hotspot for another $10 per month if you need to tether. Something to consider is that Cricket throttles to 8 mbps down, but that is fast enough to stream HD video and really should be fast enough for anything that you do on a phone.

Another interesting choice could be ROK mobile. They use Verizon towers and for $50 per month you could get 5 GB of high speed data and their music service included for free. What sets ROK apart is that their throttle point is 256 kbps instead of the standard 128 kbps after you hit your cap like everyone else. 256 kbps is a lot more usable than 128 kbps and is even enough to stream low quality YouTube video with minimal buffering.
