Does anyone have any experience with whole-home audio NOT made by Sonos?

Looking to do a Soundbar + two roaming "satellites" that can either play together, play separately, or go into Surround mode to create a 5.1 setting.

Samsung does it, but reviews say the app sucks. LG does it, but reviews say the equipment sucks. Looks like Vizio might do it, but confusing to say the least

If you want cheap meh buy Vizio.

Bose Soundtouch line is pretty solid and has one of the better sound bars I've heard.

Chromecast audio would work if you already have dumb systems in place

that's my other issue... someone gave my wife an Echo Dot for christmas and she loves it. It's pretty cool but for syncing audio across speakers, it's not very helpful from what I can tell

I can open the Fire TV and ask it to play a song -- no problem. but she wants that song to also play on a wireless speaker that she can then take with her to the back porch

You won't be able to use Echo or Fire TV to distribute directly to multiple sources that I know of. At best you will have to send it to something that can distribute it out to the wireless speaker or any other speaker.
