My sister fell for this yesterday.

She got a blinky pop-up which told her to contact Microsoft because her computer was compromised.

After giving them access to her computer, she finally thought something might be up when they wanted $200.00 to fix her computer.

So she called me.

Told her to hang up and turn the laptop off. When I got there, I removed the Citrix software they had installed along with Citrix assistant.

Ran about 3 different scans and from the malware standpoint, there isn't anything on there, but I have no clue how they got access to her computer and whether they can just jump right back in now.

I'll probably reformat this weekend.

She also fell for a really hard sell You Are Going To Jail for back taxes scam. Even though she owed nothing and has always paid her taxes. She didn't have the amount the guy was asking for. If he hadn't been so greedy, she probably would have paid it.

I know that but how did it get installed. I know nothing about remote access so I am not sure what she did that allowed them to install the citrix.

Give me her email. I have a normal p*nis but I'll tell her it's nine inches, my chances look good.

Your title belies the context in the body of your post. It should read something like: My sister fell for a virus scam yesterday.

Typically what I've seen is once they have access to the computer they'll transfer a jpeg or something to the temp folder and then they pull it up and go "see you have all these viruses" .. typically once you kill the connection you are fine.

What exactly popped up on her computer in this case? Symptoms?
Asking because my dad might have something similar, he just hasn't talked to anyone...

They actually take you into your own event viewer, where on a normal day, you will at least have some yellow to scare you..

Once you delete Citrix, i don't think they can.

The big scam these days it so make people think their computer is messed up and make them pay X amount of dollars per month to "fix" the problem. The computer is really not messed up and the scammer does nothing but collect his money.

Or the take you to a folder where the files are legit but have gibberish names.

There are some hilarious videos on YouTube of people messing with them. One counterscam is opening a virtual machine and letting them into that.
