I have an old Macbook Pro that I use pretty much just for iMovie and with some contracts I have scoring sleep studies. Anyway, it turns on, fan comes on, but no display at all. I've tried the tricks I've found on the internet as far as holding power button, taking battery out, plugging it back in, etc. It will turn on this way, but that's it. Is it worth it to try and save, or should I just buy a new laptop?

Plug it into a monitor. If you're lucky, you have a desktop now. If not, it's worth what it's worth to you, which sounds like a very small amount of data and not much else, which can be easily recovered. Repair estimates would come from someone more knowledgeable, but I've never seen a laptop >3 years old out of warranty that was worth the cost of repairing. I haven't looked all that hard though, honestly.

How old is it? Also is it possible the led light on the front is constantly on? Is it a unibody MacBook Pro or the model before that?

It's the last 17" model. Led shuts off when power off. Turns on when power on. Charger shows orange before turning to green after a while. Battery on bottom lights up green and shows how much charge is left. Everything except the screen actually coming on.

It's not worth fixing.

They don't make the 17's anymore to many people's chagrin and I think there's a pretty good niche market for them. Graphic artists, architects etc.

At a minimum sell it on Ebay for parts. You'll get more than few ducats for it, especially being the last model made.

Could be a number of things. MLB could be bad, graphics card gone out, backlight out, etc.

You can do a flat rate mail in repair with apple. It ranges from I believe $249-$449. Of course they have tier pricing as well for accidental damage. That can range from $249-$850.00.

I would not rule anything out yet.

Like Hopeful said, plug it into a monitor. That will rule out issues with the display.

I would at least get a flashlight and shine it on the screen. There might actually be something on the screen but extremely dark, if the backlight is out.
