meanwhile my free tmobile wifi -> LTE transmogrifier extends my data range 5x as far as my freaking ac wifi router.

I laughed. This really isn't for home use though.

Maybe one day I could see needing this (two routers shoved into a big box), but by the time that happens, router CPUs might have improved enough that there wouldn't be a need for two separate networks on the same band in the same router. Gotta love the bandwidth-combining to make one big huge number. With 802.11AC, it's a marketing rep's dream.

Are there even any clients with more than 3 spatial streams?

The problem is that it's totally marketed for home use. It's a consumer router with beefed up specs/features, many of which are completely unusable right now, at an inflated price. People are going to buy it, thinking that they're somehow future-proofing their network.
