Keeping land line number on a new iphone

I have a business use, land line with AT&T.
Can I cancel it and transfer, keep the phone number on a new iPhone ?
AT&T sucks, and this single line, no frills land line is up to $150 month.

I'm interested in this as well - especially how hard is it to port an AT&T landline number to a different wireless provider.
We are having to move my mom in with us in the near future for health reasons. She has had her home number for 40+ years and I would like to port it to a cell phone for her.
We are on Verizon. Would it be easier to get her an AT&T wireless account and port the phone number there?

I think what you need to do is actually go to your wireless provider and request to to port over the existing number to a new wireless number. The only possible hold up may be that it is a business number, but I don't think that will matter. Do not cancel first, talk to the wireless provider before you do anything. If you cancel without porting the number first, I think you give up the number, not sure about that though.

In general, land lines can be ported to a wireless phone. You must establish a new service while the land line is still active. If you cancel the land line first, then you are screwed. You should be able to check with the new service to make sure you can port it.
I got my land line in 2000. When Cox first came out with telephone service, I switched it over. After that promo ended, I switched it to Vonage. A couple of years ago I ported it to Google Voice. That was the most complicated process. Google Voice only allows porting of wireless numbers, so I had to add a new line to my Verizon account with my Vonage number, then port it from Verizon to Google Voice. In 17+ years, my "land line" number has been connected to 5 different services.
For anyone that wants to do away with the cost of a land line, but wants to still have one, consider Google Voice with an Obihai device.

This. Did this about 5 years and haven't regretted it one bit.
You cannot directly port a land line to Voice (at least not when I did it) so you will have to get your number ported to a burner phone before you can port it to Voice if you want to keep your number.
