I will be bringing this piece of shite back in the morning. The laptop can't even keep up with my typing and I'm not that quick. Takes forever to load webpages and I'm not seeing the avatars or like/dislike button on TD.

Anybody else have this laptop??

Any solid recommendations for a 300 to 500 hundred dollar laptop?

Sounds like bloatware problems

Check out Asus laptops. Pretty good quality for the money.

I've got an Asus 13.3 2in1 touch screen model, icore 5 processor, 1.7 gig, Windows 8.1 with free upcoming Windows 10 upgrade.

I think it's pretty snappy.

Asus model Q302LA-BBI5T14.

I bought a slightly older version of this earlier this year for $600 and am satisfied with it: LINK

Solid performance with no bloatware.

uninstall everything you do not need
Download Super AntiSpyware Free and run it
Download Malware bytes free and run it
Download C cleaner free and run it

Make sure all windows updates have run and you are up to date

Run MSCONFIG and stop loading anything that is not necessary upon start up

Any cheap computer should run fast

IF it is none of these then there is a driver, service, or other process causing some kind of resource block most likely something like PCM service

While removing bloatware from a machine and keeping it lean in general is good advice, I really don't believe that the standard HP bloatware is the cause of a brand new computer behaving as OP described -- particularly the delayed keyboard responsiveness. While, like UltimateHog, I'm curious about its specs, even a low-end (but modern) $300 POS laptop shouldn't do this out of the box.

Now, an overly aggressive power profile might cause all sorts of annoyances on battery (especially on a weak PC), but it could also be bad drivers, bad hardware somewhere, etc. Google even turns up some results regarding a bad battery, where users report that peripheral input lag (keyboard/trackpad) went away when the battery was physically removed from the machine and run on AC power only (possible explanation being a power profile not properly changing when on AC power). I'd have many questions for OP if he weren't returning it. Probably the simplest course of action.

Here are a few cheap 15" laptop suggestions:

FYI: CCleaner manages Startup files under the Tools tab.

I love how people throw this out there as if the common user knows what is and isn't necessary.

There's absolutely no reason that a $300-$500 laptop can't be a good performer. Now you do have to actually compare specs in this price range, because some models focus on portability and battery life while other focus on power and performance.

I never ever recommend hp laptops. They have always had the worst overheating issues. More so than any other brand I've used consistently
