It's with Comcast (or Xfinity or whatever their real name is these days), but at least I didn't have to sign a contract. My bill only goes up about $40-50.

Won't be installed with the new modem (have to rent; including in price increase) until the 25th though.

I'm looking forward to seeing how fast it's going to be.

that's freaking nuts. i remember when i was working at an ISP and were charging $700 a month to run T1s at 1.5 mbps to school districts.

The price really surprised me too.

Comcast only currently has the 1gig option in a couple of cities right now, Nashville being one.

The stand alone 1gig internet is only $70/month now, with a 3 year contract. But I decided to keep my X1 tv service so they waive the contract and only caused a small increase in my current bill (now it is $150/month for lots of channels, HBO and 1gig internet). Not too bad.

Oh, and they don't have a data cap with their 1gig service.

I am interested to see what your real world speeds are as you are somewhat limited by the responsiveness of the servers on the other end. I am sure it will be noticeable but am curious how much so. I guess it would depend on what you have now.

I'll be following this thread as my new apartment complex is offering "Gigablast" from Cox.

Wondering if it's worth the pricetag. Let us know?

TIA.

I'll update after its installed. Won't be till the 25th.

I do appreciate that comcast didn't make me sign a contract. Google fiber should be coming soon, so I will switch to them when that happens.

Really depends on how many devices will be streaming at once.

For the vast majority it is not worth it right now.

Check the fine print. If I remember correctly, it is cheap because you are agreeing to let Comcast track your every move online and share the information with marketers. If you opt out of tracking, the price goes way up.

I'll check, but they didn't mention that. I do know that AT&T was doing this, but I haven't heard of Comcast doing the same.

Also, I run a VPN. I'm not tech savvy enough to know if that would prevent them from seeing my traffic data though.

Two ISPs in my town offer fiber internet service. My apartment refuses to let it be installed. As a result I pay $76 a month for 30 Mbps and a 1tb data cap when I could have 1 gbps and no data cap for $77.

They say they can't have holes being drilled in the units but that they are not sure of what all enabling fiber will entail. Any time I've asked if they've had discussion with the internet companies they say no and clam up when I ask why.

I'm pretty close to having gigablast available in my neighborhood from ATT which I'm stoked about. But Im not sure what the pricing is like. I thought I read that 1Gb speeds were like $120/month or something. If so I'll likely start with the 300mb option which is still 3x faster than what I had with Cox previously

Had the gig service installed on Monday, and so far, wow. It's fast. Too fast for what I'll ever need.

I'll try to screens shot some speeds later, but it maxes out my equipment capabilities.

Probably the best part is the router they gave me. You can't have your own for now, but they supply a top of the line netgear router for $10/month because they don't make their own yet capable of the speeds. They gave me this one:

netgear router

At that price, renting is OK for me. And this actually supplies my entire house by itself, where I previously needed several wifi extenders for full coverage. This router is amazing.

What outside installation did they have to do?

Nothing outside. It runs over the same lines as before. They ran several tests and ensured it would work, but no construction or special equipment (besides router).

Go figure, Comcast has always had this ability, just no need to give it before Google fiber.

And there was one hiccup, this is comcast after all. They promised that my TV service would not change, but it turns out that was a lie. My HBO stopped working and I had to spend an entire day getting it sorted out. They ended up giving it to me for a year, but after that it will be an additional 15/month, whereas it was part of my original package pricing.

This is the result from my phone (with a VPN active). I'll have to try a hard wire test some other time.
