Well, look what I just came across

LINK

quote:

The Google Play Music deauth limit is bullshite

quote:

So I flash a few roms. I have a few devices. I give Google $10 a month for all access, and because of my first two statements I now can't access my music.

A 10 device limit? Sure, I understand not wanting to be able to share your account around with friends. But this deauth limit is the most arbitrary BS I have ever seen.

Some of the entries are definitely due to flashing ROMS, but there are certainly duplicates too. And now (I have since flashed both my N5 and N7) I will not be able to access my music for another year.
AND IT'S RETROACTIVE. This doesn't just apply to de-authing any devices from now, it applies to any you have de-authed in the past. Before this limit was created. What the frick?

Make no mistake, I want to be a legit, paying customer. But pulling BS like this makes me cancel your fricking service . I want to love you Google, I really do. But you have made your position clear. Your moto "Don't Be Evil" my arse. Maybe it was once. Maybe it never was. Maybe go frick yourself.

If your service doesn't fricking work, regardless of price, then I'm not going to have anything to do with it, and I'm going to go and get my music for free because I'm not going to jump through a million hoops to give you fricking money.

I've read about Google taking similar measures against YouTube users and app developers. Here is one of those stories:

An Android Developer’s Nightmare:
How my developer account was shut down without any warnings, overnight.

You can have it.

Smells like bullshite. Just flashing the ROM multiple times in the same device won't change the id and make it show up multiple times. I think he's been sharing with friends using a throw away gmail address and got popped.

Eta I have had 4 different nexus 4 devices and a nexus 5 all of which have been flashed many times and my account currently shows 2 phones and 3 PCs (PCs don't count toward your limit)

eta 2 screenshot. you can deauthorize up to 4 devices a year which seems reasonable with 10 total unless you're doing something shifty. i fail to see the issue colorchange is trying to create here

Your devices are keeping the same id. For some reason the user I linked to devices are generating new device IDs every time he flashes.

ETA: with Apple, iOS devices don't count towards your device limit at all. Just FYI.

3 more fallacies in that reddit (yep reddit) post

1. the 10 device limit has nothing to do with your personal 20,000 song music library; its the *all access* component (what the redditor is paying $10/mo for) that is limited to 10 devices and ulimited PCs.

2. google is basing the authorization off the IMEI of the phone, not the ROM so no matter how many times you flash, its not going to show up again. I have flashed & wiped my phones eleventy billion times and you can clearly see from my screenshot they are only listed once.

3. that screenshot appears fake. notice his phone is listed as 'nexus 5' on his photoshopped sreen and mine is 'Google LGE Nexus 5'.

hmmm, smells like an apple troll got colorchange all wound up.

show me the link to the apple 'unlimited music' plan and then we can compare apples to apples to google's 'all access'

eta to clarify colorchange, google doesn't limit your personal mp3 library either so that's not a valid argument.

if you do a factory reset when you flash the ROM it will register your phone as another device. Not sure why he is having that problem, I just deauthorized 10 devices, added some back, and deauthed again. Didn't have a limit

Apparently color is right. DL is reporting it. Must be a roll out per account. Surprising they are dong this the same way as last year

If you do decide to flash make sure you follow this
quote:

Just a friendly reminder. Titanium Backup lets you backup and restore your android ID (which this system uses to notice a new device) for those who flash often

no, he's not.

a. it doesn't apply to your private 20,000 song collection you uploaded to the cloud
b. there *is* a change in policy to only allow 4 deauthorizations in a 12 month period for *ALL ACCESS* (copyrighted music) due to some loopholes where people are sharing their 'all access' account and abusing the 'deauthorization' feature.
c. the change just took place 12 hours ago so its odd someone has already gone in and deauthorized 5 devices in that time frame. That means they had to already have 10 mobile devices, deauthorize 4 and then add 5 more in the last 12 hours to get that to happen. THAT DOESN'T SEEM SUSPICIOUS AT ALL.
d. the picture he linked doesn't show the same name for the Nexus 5 as mine..smells like photoshop
e. i've run tons of custom ROMs on multiple Nexus 4 devices and my N5 in the last 12 months yet I don't have a single duplicated listing and Google says they are using device ID (IMEI)

so there's lots of misleading/false info in colorchange's snippet.

it kills you that I am, or was at least.

It was a bug that seems to be fixed now.

quote:

I read a guy reporting this on Google+, so I tried and I did not have a duplicate after a complete wipe of /system, /data, /cache. This might have been a bug, but I do not see a duplicate on both the website and mobile app. It may be the change Google talked about, they're probably using some kind of hardware identifier now.
This makes the whole drama obsolete.

android police is reporting a work around
quote:

I talked to a Google rep (after a lengthy wait) who claims they can manually reset device authorizations. Not the deauthorization counter, but all your authorized devices. According to the Google rep, after you call and make the request it takes 24 hours for your device authorizations to be cleared out. Then you log back in with your current phones and tablets. Don't take it as gospel, but that's what I was told. I'll know if it worked tomorrow. Yes, this is very, very stupid. It prevents exactly zero abuses of the system and creates a new headache for users.

no, you weren't. you took a reddit post and ran with it without the most cursory knowledge of facts.

you painted a picture of a problem that was far from reality.

I don't know how that could be if I only copied and pasted the post and said I had heard of similar things happening with other google services and said you can have it.

OP,I have another question.

I'm pretty much convinced that I'm going to change to the G3 this weekend. My only concern now is the size. Do you find that the bigger phone is an adjustment? It just seems like it would be kinda large to fit in your pocket, especially when wearing jeans.

Well frick me. That's an odd message since I haven't had all access since the first month they offered it.

Google is definitely screwing around with this service today.

I bet they're goes my $8 loophole.
