that was originally an AT&T phone so it could be used on Verizon Network?

What model iPhone?
I'm pretty sure iPhone 6 or newer will work fine.
Are you sure the phone is locked to ATT? May be as simple as putting a Verizon SIM card in it

Definitely give it a try. I used my dads art iPhone 6 for awhile on my Verizon plan and had no issue. He never requested an unlock
