Just use the template online and a cardboard box. $10 isn't much but at least try the template first.

Is it WORTH it. Yes to get a glimpse into what VR has to offer. Its in no way intended to be a long last piece.
I have the Gear VR (came free with my phone purchase) even these aren't anything special but are pretty nice

If you wear glasses Cardboard pretty much sucks. You can use it, but you'll get more of a "looking through a window" effect than an "I'm there in it" effect.
