Is Chromecast worth purchasing?

I admittedly know nothing about the Chromecast device and what it does, so looking for some advice.

I have Apple TV and Amazon Fire Stick already and they work great. Would it be beneficial to also have Chromecast? What does it actually DO? Just cast stuff from your devices onto the TV?

Mostly just wondering if it would do anything that my Apple TV and Fire Stick don't already do. TIA

If you don't have roommates, i suggest anything but the chromecast.

The chromecast, I think, is the most beneficial when multiple people live there and can stream from their own netflix/hulu/hbo etc

Otherwise, it does exactly what the apple tv and firetv do, except you dont have access to anything purchased on amazon or apple.

Thanks. Yeah I live by myself so it sounds like it wouldn't be worth it for me.

Pretty much every app on your phone can cast. So you just hit a button and it shows on the tv. HBO go, Netflix, Hulu, ALL music apps, the browser itself, YouTube, etc.

Not even sure why anyone would want a chrome cast over a firestick, roku or similar. I have a first gen chromecast that I got before Amazon came out with fire sticks and fire boxes, I have both hooked up but I've only used the chromecast once since I got my firebox in November of 2016. The one time I used it was to cast a YouTube video I had pulled up on my phone which I could have pulled up on the firebox.

I love my chromecast. We use it for youtube, HBO, netflix, etc constantly. Anything on my internet browser on my laptop and basically any video or radio app on my phone streams to it. It was definitely one of the best purchases for under $40 I've ever made.

Then why do you not use a FireTV/TVstick? Seems pointless to me to have to pull up a stream on your phone just to send it to the chromecast.

I've got both, and I never use the chromecast anymore (have it plugged in in the bar-room TV just in case I want to stream the LSU game in an extra room or something).

Moreover:

Amazon FireTV is faster, comes with a voice -control enabled remote, and has a great user interface. For about the exact same price. (~$5 more)

Being able to watch Amazon prime content on your google cast is sort of a misnomer. You have to work around it by going to your google chrome browser and then streaming it with the cast button. I might be mistaken, but i am pretty sure Amazon does not support the google stuff yet so the only way to stream it is to work around it. Sounds like a total PIA to me.

If you already had the chromecast, fine, but since you can start out new, get the FireTV stick.

Yeah why would I want to stream from my phone or laptop when I can buy a roku, Apple TV, or fire stick and just stream directly.

It's perfect for an outdoor tv or a tv you have nothing hooked up to.

It's not meant to be a primary device.

+1

I have chromecast on my outdoor TV. I stream ESPN, netflix HBO go to it. I like it, but they are all so similar. Just depends on what interface you want. If you want your phone to control content then chromecast may be for you. If you want a remote then I like firestick. Either way they are a cheap and easy way to make a TV more functional.

Agreed. The guy saying you couldn't watch amazon stuff on it is wrong though.

Right. But how wrong? Its not as simple as clicking a button and boom you're streaming -- you have to go through a back channel. Which is really annoying, but fine if you already had the device.

If you're starting out new, what would you choose first? Obvious choice is an Amazon stick.

You can stream anything that you open in a chrome browser by using the cast button. It's not technically supported, but it's a workaround.

The question is whether the Chromecast is worth purchasing over the roku or firestick. The answer has to be no.

You can pretty much stream anything to the firetv that you can with chromecast. PLUS the firetv is faster, has a remote, and a very user friendly interface.

Chromecast, I still contend, is useful 1) if you already had it when it first came out 2) if you use the Chromecast audio (which I love, but then relaplaced with an echo) or 3) if you have people with different accounts to Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc

Otherwise, you might as well buy a firestick or roku since they both do the same, and offer much more.
