iPhone died and, upon powering up, all texts were deleted

WTF? It's a POS 5s and has been having weird glitches upon dying (like contact names not showing up at first) but this shite is ridiculous. I have sensitive work information in my texts that I need. When I do spotlight search, I can see the texts, so they are clearly hiding somewhere.
Anyone have experience with this? Apparently Ifonebox or something can help recover, but I'd rather not shell out $50 for something that might work. Does Icloud save texts?

If you restore from a previous backup, they should come back
They aren't specifically synced in iCloud as messages but they are part of the backup I believe.

last night i was at the pool with the kids and my wife sat out.
when i got out of the pool she was on my phone (we both have a "you can look at my phone anytime you want policy") but i still had that moment of terror.... crap, i hope i didn't leave it on a TD thread about olympic hotties or something.
fortunately the only grief i got was for sending impolite GIFs in texts to my friend recently.

Update: Found an iCloud backup from August 5th and it gave me my texts back. whew. thanks guys.
