I support it. My daughter is 13 and I found her listening to some shite on YouTube I did not approve of. I'm beginning to worry about the kind of stuff her and her friends are into.
OP, I don't know but I hope someone chimes in.

While I may have no idea what is going on, I have to believe there needs to be a certain level of trust between you and your kid. I am not condoning that this is the way to monitor you child.
That being said, if you have a spare iPad or iPhone laying around, have them sign into their iMessage account on it and set it to receive the messages on both devices. You can even restrict the child's device from turning that feature off using the 'Restrictions' menu on the phone.
So even though I disagree with your parental monitoring, at least I answered your question.
More info on the restrictions menu:

You can limit anything (such as youtube as the poster above mentioned). But again, if you limit it one place, kids are usually smart enough to figure out a way around it.

This would work for iPhones but any SMS text messages to and from an android phone or any other non-iOS devices wouldn't show up.

I suppose you were an angel as a kid/teenager and never lied to your parents or did anything you didn't want them knowing? C'mon man.

not true anymore, with new iOS, SMS messages also show up.

Hey, I answered the question, didn't I? My comment was more tongue in cheek vs trying to disrespect the parenting style.
