I've been looking at external storage options for my Ipad. I've got an Ipad Pro and looking for options for documents/photos/charts etc. Wireless storage is ok, lightning connector is ok as well. Cloud based NAS is acceptable as well. I've seen quite a few but wanted to get other's ideas/pros/cons about their set up.

TIA

Why not use a cloud based provider such as GDrive, OneDrive, DropBox, etc?

Otherwise, a wireless external drive works for me. But I don't need to access or store a lot to it on the road. Mainly use it for streaming or looking at documents, no editing or modifying. I'm not familiar with any lightning connector options, but I'd imagine they exist.

How much storage do you need? For photos I would use Google Photos. For documents and charts I would use Dropbox or something similar. If you don't want to use cloud storage you can use a lightning flash drive to access data on an iOS device.

iXpand

ETA: There are also wireless options.

SanDisk Connect

I have the free versions of Google Drive, OneDrive, Box and the Apple Cloud. They all seem OK but they are limiting in size. I'd rather have it on my home network or in hand rather rely on a subscription based system.

The reason: I shoot a lot of photos in RAW mode so they can eat up storage space a lot. Recently took up a new hobby so I'll be shooting a lot more photos underwater...

Yeah I saw the "curled drives" as I call them, and I was curious if someone had real world experience with them or not. I've seen wireless drives such as WD's and the more expensive Apple branded ones....that's why I was asking if anyone had a preference based on experience.

Are you shooting them on your iPad? Editing them? I'm not sure how the iPad plays into this hobby/storage constraints.

I assume your camera is using some form of external card? I have a Sandisk wireless drive and it works great for transferring data from a card to the drive. But getting data to/from an iPad is a much different issue.

Do you need to store multiple shoots/sessions before using some non-mobile drive? For example if you had a wired drive at home, connected to a router, that would store all your primary files, but be accessible from remote, and used a card/cloud/wireless drive option while on the road/mobile?

Ipad is only to view photos and make edits if I don't bring my laptop computer. As my diving hobby takes up a lot of weight I'm trying to reduce travel weight so sometimes I may not always be able to bring my laptop...but Ipad is simple.

Olympus TG-4 Dive camera (with housing for scuba diving) has a wifi connection so I don't have to continuously remove it from the housing (reduces wear on O-ring and potential housing leaks). But yes, it has a SD card also...As does my Canon Rebel (CF card).

The "store at home" cloud option has always appealed to me, but on the rare dives where I'm on a livaboard scuba boat, there may not be wifi/cellular data available, but I could always just bring more SD cards (again having to open the housing to access the camera).
