I am in 2 group messages. One is 7 friends from highschool that i still play fantasy football with and all. Another is 10 of us that all went to college together and we all keep up that way.
I keep my phone on DND i feel your pain.
A while ago my smaller group got annoying and i text them each individually and asked them all to create a new group text without me and they did. Its not that difficult. Unless you have shitty friends. Then i got bored and got back into it haha

Why do so many people use group messages for chat? There are dozens of better options. Actually, group messages is probably by far the absolute worse way to communicate with a group of people.

I'd say conference calls are worse.
FWIW, I've never had a bad group text experience. I use GroupMe for one group chat that's been going on for 3-4 years. Everything else is done via text. Have one for family and one for a group of friends from college. No one has ever been an a-hole.

Never understood why people get so annoyed at getting texts. My girlfriend is in a group chain and she gets pissed about it as well.
Granted the only ones I'm in talk about football, chicks, and drinking so I guess it might be different if shite got political/religious, but I doubt it would ever seriously piss me off.

I don't like them because I'm still holding onto my old-school plan with 200 texts a month before I'm charged per text. But for others with unlimited, I imagine the annoyance comes from the sound/vibrate with every text, and it's some bullshite that doesn't have anything to do with you.
Imagine someone started a circle jerk IM thread on the OT, and you received an SMS of every post, whether you posted in the thread or not.

Bc it's not the worst way to communicate with a group of people. It's easy and convenient and doesn't require everyone to download and install a different app and create and share account information... Should be pretty obvious

Using group messaging for chat allows OTHERS to add YOU to a group. That is absolutely terrible functionality. It cannot be overstated how OBVIOUSLY broken this is when used for group chatting.
You should be able to join and leave a group as you wish, not as others wish you to do.
You think it's obvious why people use group messages for chat? I think it's obvious why group chat apps were created: to fix all the ways that group messaging is obviously broken when used for chat.
It's easy, yeah, but it's NOT convenient. That's why OP started this thread, because it's annoying and broken. And do you really think it's hard to get a dozen people to install an app? frick, you can send the link to it in your annoying arse group text, and say "hey guys, let's install this app and stop being stupid". That's it, over, done.
You think it's easier and more convenient to keep a 14 person group text going for a year? One that you can't leave? So fricking convenient.
Look, I'm right, you're wrong. Group messages is the absolute worst way to communicate with a group. One-off announcement, fine. Back and forth chatting, no fricking way. Should be pretty obvious.
