I'm looking for an in room HD camera for a child's room. Preferably something I can later integrate to a whole home system once it is no longer needed in the child's room. How is the amcrest system? Any other suggestions?

Foscam. They are good and not too pricey.

What about monitor wise? Just phone, tablet, or dedicated monitor?

foscams have everything built into the camera for DVR-ing but its not the most intuitive thing. this includes setting 'movement zones', emailing you still images, recording only when activity occurs, etc.

however they bought 'blue iris' (i think thats the name) which is a great piece of software to manage this but it will run you about $30 or so.

Agree with all of this. I used to have the Nest one (forgot the name) and it was junk (free from my neighbor).

Yeah I've read some negatives on the nest, especially for the price.

So if either of you were going to do a setup for a nursery how would it go? I made the mistake of letting my wife buy a terrible baby monitor and am looking for a drastic improvement in quality and feature.

i just did this. i ran the foscam 21w (or whatever the one is on amazon with 10 gazillion reviews) and ran the IR manually for night mode.

it will do HD and you can mount it upside or rightside up or anything so i wouldn't make it permanent in case your wife is like mine and she likes to move furniture in the room around.

mine was in the closet (we turned that into a little baby changing area) and i dont have anything particularly outstanding about it to report.

just install, configure and go. the foscam is a very capable cam.

eta here is the camera and the room it is covering

Let me get this right. Your neighbor gave you a free "In room wireless camera".

Did you ever get the feeling someone was watching you?

And this post was from "idlewatcher".....

I have a Foscam in my daughter's room. I mostly use my laptop, and my wife mostly uses an old nook color. The camera has a web server so that you can use most browsers to view it, and there are plenty of IP cam viewer apps that you can install on a phone or tablet.

I strongly recommend a camera that has pan/tilt functionality. We have the camera in the corner at the foot of the bed. I often pan the camera to other parts of the room when she's awake.

my wife and her sister were hanging out in the room right after i set it up and i was at work. so i put on 'somebody's watching me' on youtube and turned on the remote speaker.

Cad, what do you use for monitor and/or storage if any?

I'm leaning towards the $100 amcrest which is apparently under the foscam umbrella

This is what I was hoping to hear. So I can pretty much use anything to view. Does the pan and tilt carry over to the devices?

have you read my posts on here?

i just bought a cheap 1GB external drive from staples, hooked it up as a NAS to my router and video gets stored there WHEN i record something.

you'll find there's no need (at least in my case) for 24/7 video, i only wanted to record if something happens.

eta i think i have a massive foscam thread on here from a long time ago where i went over all the settings.

in short: if you can hardwire or even better, PoE-wire it, you'll save yourself 95% of the headaches. yep its a wireless camera but you eliminate eleventy-billion headaches if you run ethernet to it.

yes. i even use my andoidwear to view it.

tinywebcam i think is the app.

foscam has a simple/open API that any idiot building a cam app can use.

their app has gotten way better but yes you can drag your finger around to move the camera or use the little 'on screen' arrows and it will work in any browser as well as phones.

I have, but my work day doesn't allow me to scan your post history

I'm not afraid to hardwire it at some point down the road, just not tomorrow! I really just want this to work well and make me want more. I expect a few headaches, I just don't want to curse too much and throw it into a wall

biggest achilles heel for now is no home automation hub supports the foscams in lieu of the pricey 'subscription' cams which i think all suck balls.

however, i don't really miss anything by not having the foscam in a merged app but i'm sure i'd find reasons to want it there if it was.

given the simple straightforward API, there is NO reason (other than lack of motivation) foscams arent available in smartthings and wink just like honeywells, nests, ecobees and chamberlain garage door openers.

i dont think foscam gives a damn..they made the api completely open after all.

Is that specifically the foscam brand? Or the amcrest also?

Price looks good, but any further info on the fist amazon review?

quote:

rst of all I have several of these cameras and have been happy with the performance and reliability. However, many of us owners have discovered that the cameras (newer models) establish connections to servers all over the world without the owners permission. The problem can not be resolved without implementing difficult router port filtering programming that many routers do not support and even then the cameras are still trying to establish remote sessions causing router warning messages of possible network viruses and over utilization of RAM. In essence, you must program advanced port filtering on the router to reject outgoing traffic from the camera so that it can not pass into the internet. This is NOT the way to fix this problem. It needs to be fixed at the source which appears to be the camera. Captures of the outgoing traffic has been provided to Foscam.

Many of us owners are concerned about what data is actually being sent to these remote servers or viewers.

Please read Foscam's Forum under the thread title of "Foscam Dialing Out to Suspect Hosts". I don't believe Amazon allows posting of urls so I won't post the forum address here. FYI - This is not a weak password problem as many of you have probably heard about.
