In-Ceiling Speaker Question

Had a similar situation a couple of years ago. The house had a JBL speaker system that wasn't as good as the Klipsch system I had so I installed my speakers and just left the others in the ceiling. I did activate the outdoor speakers that were already installed out back and they work great

Where do the speaker wires land? Are they all home run to the same location? This is going to play a role in your flexibility.
Don't think you have to have surround sound just because there is a TV in the room. For most rooms a stereo pair is just fine. The worst thing people can do is to put surround sound in a room that is acoustically wrong for it.
